Materials
3 wooden trays of varying sizes (10x7, 8x5, and 6x4 inches)
Old road maps (sufficient to cover the inside of each tray)
Matte mod podge (8 oz)
Foam brush
Scissors
Craft knife
Ruler
Sandpaper (fine grit)
Clear acrylic sealer spray
Directions
Sand the inside surface of each wooden tray with fine grit sandpaper until smooth.
Select road map sections that fit the interior dimensions of each tray and cut them out using scissors.
Apply a layer of mod podge to the inside of the first tray using a foam brush.
Carefully place the cut map section onto the mod podged surface, smoothing out any air bubbles with your fingers or a craft knife.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the remaining trays.
Once all maps are adhered, apply another layer of mod podge over the top of each map to seal it.
Allow the mod podge to dry completely, which typically takes 1-2 hours.
Spray a clear acrylic sealer over each tray to protect the map surface and add durability.
Let the trays dry overnight before using them.
Variations & Tips
For a more personalized touch, consider using maps from specific regions that hold personal significance, such as hometowns or favorite travel destinations. Alternatively, experiment with different finishes of mod podge, such as glossy or glitter, to add a different texture and sheen to the trays. Adding small wooden handles to the sides of the trays can enhance their functionality and aesthetic, making them easier to carry and use.
