Transform an ordinary plastic trash can into a stunning, artisan fluted stone patio planter using foam pool noodles and white concrete. This DIY project provides an affordable way to create elegant outdoor decor that mimics high-end stone planters, perfect for adding a touch of sophistication to any patio or garden area.
These planters are best styled in pairs or groups to create a cohesive look. Place them on either side of a garden path, or use them to frame an entryway. Opt for vibrant or lush greenery to contrast with the white stone finish, enhancing the visual appeal. Coordinate with other stone or concrete elements in your outdoor space to unify the aesthetic.
Foam Noodle Stone Planter

Materials
1 plastic trash can (20-gallon size)
40 foam pool noodles (each approximately 48 inches long)
Heavy white concrete mix
Strong adhesive or glue suitable for foam
Paintbrush for applying concrete
Sandpaper (medium grit)
Sealant for concrete
Directions
Cut each pool noodle in half lengthwise to create a flat side for adhering to the trash can.
Apply a generous amount of adhesive to the flat side of each noodle, then attach them vertically around the exterior of the trash can, ensuring they fit snugly together with no gaps.
Once all noodles are attached, allow the adhesive to fully cure as per the manufacturer's instructions.
Prepare the white concrete mix according to the instructions on the package.
Using a paintbrush, apply the concrete evenly over the entire surface, covering both the foam noodles and the exposed parts of the trash can.
Allow the first coat to dry, then apply a second coat for added texture and durability.
After the concrete has fully cured, use sandpaper to smooth any rough edges or inconsistencies.
Seal the concrete with a suitable outdoor sealant to protect against weather and wear.

Variations & Tips
For a different look, consider painting the concrete with outdoor acrylic paint in a color that complements your garden's palette before sealing it. Alternatively, use textured paint to mimic the appearance of other natural stones like granite or sandstone. You can also vary the height by using different sized trash cans or cutting the noodles at different lengths before attaching them.
