Crocheting offers a creative and sustainable way to upcycle common household items, transforming them into functional and beautiful pieces. This project focuses on repurposing rusty wire closet hangers into sturdy tomato plant trellises. By crocheting over the wire, you not only extend the life of the hangers but also create a unique and practical garden accessory. This DIY solves the problem of flimsy plant supports and adds a rustic, handmade touch to your garden decor.
These crochet-covered trellises can be used in your garden to support tomato plants or other climbing vegetables. Opt for earthy tones like olive green, terracotta, or natural jute to blend seamlessly with the garden environment. The texture should be slightly rough to mimic natural fibers, providing a cohesive look with the outdoors. Position them strategically in garden beds or pots for maximum support and visual appeal.
Crochet-Covered Tomato Plant Trellises from Upcycled Wire Hangers

Materials
Rusty wire closet hangers (5 total)
100% cotton yarn, DK weight (approx. 200 yards)
Crochet hook, size 4mm
Wire cutters
Directions
1. Use wire cutters to snip the hanger at the hook and straighten the wire completely.
2. Bend the wire into a triangular shape, ensuring all corners are securely twisted together.
3. With the 4mm crochet hook, create a slip knot and attach the yarn to one corner of the triangle.
4. Chain 3, then work a single crochet (sc) around the wire frame, covering it entirely. Continue until the entire frame is covered.
5. When you reach a corner, work 3 sc into the corner to cover it smoothly before continuing along the next side.
6. Once you have crocheted around the entire frame, join with a slip stitch to the first sc, fasten off, and weave in the ends.
7. Repeat steps 1-6 for each of the remaining wire hangers.
8. To assemble the trellis, connect two triangles by binding their sides with additional yarn using a whip stitch. Continue to add triangles until you reach the desired height and shape.

Variations & Tips
For variations, consider using jute or hemp yarn for a more rustic and eco-friendly look. You can also experiment with different colors to create a whimsical garden feature. Adjust the size of the trellises by bending the wire into larger or smaller triangles, depending on your plant support needs. Try incorporating different crochet stitches like half-double crochet for a thicker texture or using a larger hook size for a looser, more airy appearance.
