This DIY project transforms ordinary red, white, and blue plastic garbage bags into a striking piece of heavy-duty outdoor decor. Using an iron and just a few common household items, you can create a durable and visually appealing decoration perfect for patriotic holidays or year-round garden display. This project repurposes plastic waste into something beautiful and functional, offering both environmental benefits and aesthetic appeal.
The finished decor piece can be styled outdoors, ideally in a garden or on a patio. Its bright colors complement green foliage and can be a focal point when placed near a seating area or garden path. Pair it with neutral-toned furniture or pots to allow the vibrant colors to stand out. Its weather-resistant nature makes it suitable for year-round display, adding a pop of color against natural elements.
Patriotic Plastic Garden Display

Materials
Red plastic garbage bags (3-4)
White plastic garbage bags (3-4)
Blue plastic garbage bags (3-4)
Household iron
Parchment paper
Scissors
Two heavy books or flat weights
Directions
Cut the red, white, and blue plastic garbage bags into large rectangles measuring approximately 18x24 inches each.
Layer one red, one white, and one blue rectangle on top of each other, ensuring they are aligned.
Place a sheet of parchment paper on a flat surface, then lay the layered plastic rectangles on top.
Cover the plastic layers with another sheet of parchment paper.
Set the iron to a medium-low setting without steam.
Gently iron over the parchment paper in a circular motion, applying even pressure. Continue until the plastic layers partially melt and bond together, but maintain some texture for visual interest.
Once fused, allow the plastic to cool and harden under two heavy books or flat weights for 10 minutes.
Repeat the process with remaining plastic bags to create multiple fused sheets.
Cut the fused sheets into desired shapes such as stars or stripes, using scissors.
Assemble the cut shapes into a cohesive design, layering them as needed for a 3D effect. Secure by pressing them together lightly with the iron between parchment paper.

Variations & Tips
To add dimension, consider incorporating reflective materials like small pieces of aluminum foil between layers before ironing. This will provide a shimmering effect when sunlight hits the decor. Alternatively, experimenting with different shapes such as abstract forms or themed patterns can personalize the display. Ensure any additional materials are heat-resistant and align with the project's outdoor durability.
