This DIY project transforms ordinary beach towels and old plastic grocery bags into oversized backyard floor cushions. It’s a sustainable and cost-effective way to repurpose items you likely already have at home. These cushions provide comfortable seating for outdoor gatherings, making them perfect for patios or garden areas. Not only is this hack budget-friendly, but it also helps reduce waste by reusing plastic bags.
Place these vibrant cushions around a patio table or scatter them across a grassy area for a casual, inviting seating arrangement. Choose beach towels in colors that complement your outdoor décor—consider bold, tropical hues for a lively look or more muted tones for a zen-like garden retreat. Pair them with outdoor rugs or string lights to enhance the cozy ambiance.
Beach Towel Floor Cushions

Materials
6 colorful beach towels (preferably 30 x 60 inches each)
40 old plastic grocery bags
Sewing kit or fabric glue
Scissors
Measuring tape
Directions
Lay one beach towel flat on a large surface.
Fold the towel in half lengthwise, creating a long rectangle.
Secure the edges with a sewing kit or fabric glue, leaving a small opening on one side.
Stuff the folded towel with approximately 6-7 plastic grocery bags, evenly distributing them for a plush feel.
Sew or glue the opening shut to secure the stuffing inside.
Repeat steps 1-5 with the remaining towels.
Once all towels are stuffed and sealed, stack them on top of each other, alternating colors for a vibrant pattern.
Optional: Secure the stacked towels together with additional stitching or fabric glue for a more stable cushion.

Variations & Tips
For added comfort, consider using a thin layer of foam in addition to the plastic bags for stuffing. This will provide more support while maintaining the eco-friendly aspect of the project. Another variation is to use waterproof fabric spray on the towels to enhance their durability against the elements, making them more suitable for outdoor use. You can also sew or glue decorative buttons onto the cushions for a tufted look.
