There’s something about a lantern glow in autumn that takes me straight back to chilly evenings in the country, when the yard looked plain by day and downright magical by supper time. This project is a fall lantern walkway made by lining tall copper hurricane lanterns with cream pillar candles along a flagstone path, and it’s one of those simple outdoor touches that makes a front yard feel polished, welcoming, and wonderfully seasonal without a lot of fuss.
I especially love this for folks who want a big visual change without digging up the garden or taking on a major landscape project. If you’ve already got a stone path and a few planting beds, you can pull this together in an afternoon and enjoy it all season long, whether you’re dressing up the yard for company, a harvest gathering, or just your own evening porch view.
Materials
Instructions
1. Sweep the flagstone path thoroughly so the lanterns will sit level and the whole display looks crisp from the start.
2. Measure the length of the walkway and decide on even lantern spacing, leaving enough room for comfortable walking between the stones and the lantern line.
3. Wipe down each copper lantern with a soft cloth to remove dust and bring out the warm finish.
4. Add about 1 cup of pea gravel or play sand to the base of each lantern to help weigh it down and keep it steady outdoors.
5. Set one cream pillar candle inside each lantern, centered on the base or on top of the gravel, and secure it with an adhesive dot or a small bit of museum putty if needed.
6. Close the lantern doors or tops securely and carry the lanterns to the walkway, placing them along one or both sides of the flagstone path at the spacing you planned.
7. Step back and adjust each lantern so the line looks balanced, with similar spacing and a gentle rhythm along the stones rather than a rigid, crowded row.
8. Light the candles with a long lighter just before dusk so the copper and cream tones show up beautifully as the light fades.
Variations & Tips
Use flameless candles: If your walkway gets breezy, swap the wax pillars for outdoor flameless candles in the same size for a steadier glow and less upkeep.
Keep the color palette soft: I like cream candles with copper because it feels classic and not fussy, but soft white or pale taupe candles would also suit a fall garden beautifully.
Change the spacing for your path: On a shorter walkway, place lanterns every 2 to 3 feet for a fuller look; on a long path, spacing them 3 to 4 feet apart keeps the display elegant and uncluttered.
Add seasonal layers sparingly: A pair of mums near the porch or a simple doormat at the path’s end is usually plenty, since the lantern line itself already does the heavy lifting.
Protect the finish: If your copper lanterns will stay outside for several weeks, wipe them dry after rain and bring them under cover during strong wind or storms.
Make it safer for guests: Always keep lanterns off the main walking surface and far enough from trailing plants, dried leaves, or porch textiles that nothing brushes against the flame.
Try a one-sided arrangement: If your garden bed is only on one side of the path, line lanterns on that edge alone and let the asymmetry look intentional and relaxed.
