There’s something about a softly lit porch in the evening that makes a home feel instantly welcoming, especially once the air turns crisp and the seasonal decorating starts calling my name. This project is a simple set of harvest porch lanterns made by placing warm LED candles inside oversized glass jars and displaying them on wooden crates, and it delivers a lot of charm without requiring power tools, wiring, or a full weekend of work.
I love projects like this because they borrow a little from kitchen styling and a little from seasonal decorating: clear glass, warm light, natural wood, and just enough height variation to make the arrangement look thoughtful. If you want a front porch display that feels cozy, polished, and easy to customize for fall, this is a very approachable afternoon project.
Materials
3 oversized clear glass jars, 1 gallon each, wide-mouth or large opening
Instructions
1. Choose a dry, level spot on your front porch where the lanterns will be visible from the walkway but won’t block the door swing or create a tripping hazard.
2. Wipe down the wooden crates with a dry cloth and make sure they sit flat without wobbling; if needed, rotate them until the most stable side faces down.
3. Clean the glass jars inside and out with glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth so the candlelight will glow clearly through the glass.
4. Set the two crates on the porch, either side by side for a wider display or slightly staggered for more height variation; I usually like a staggered arrangement because it looks more natural.
5. Add a small piece of removable museum putty to the bottom edge of each jar to help keep it from shifting on the crate surface, especially on breezy porches.
6. Place two jars on the crates and one jar directly on the porch beside them to create an easy three-piece grouping with varied heights.
7. Turn on each LED candle and place one candle inside each jar, centering it so the glow looks balanced from all sides.
8. Wrap a length of jute twine around the neck of each jar two or three times and tie a simple knot or bow for a soft rustic finish.
9. Tuck a few faux fall leaves and 2 or 3 mini pinecones around the base of each jar or along the crate corners, keeping the decoration loose so the lanterns remain the focus.
10. Step back and adjust the spacing until the arrangement looks balanced from the curb and from the front door, then set the candles to timer mode if your LED candles have that feature.
Variations & Tips
Add seasonal fillers: If you want a fuller harvest look, scatter a few small pumpkins, gourds, or extra pinecones around the crates without crowding the jars.
Use timer candles: Battery candles with a built-in timer are my favorite for porch décor because you get the evening glow without remembering to switch them on every night.
Try mixed jar sizes: Using one slightly taller or wider jar can make the grouping feel more collected and less store-bought, as long as the candles still look proportional inside.
Keep it weather-aware: On a covered porch, these lanterns hold up beautifully, but I’d still bring lightweight accents like faux leaves indoors during heavy wind or rain.
Choose warm light only: For this kind of cozy porch styling, warm white LED candles look much more inviting than cool white bulbs, which can feel a little stark through clear glass.
Stabilize uneven crates: If an older crate rocks slightly, add a thin furniture pad or folded bit of outdoor-safe material under one corner before placing the jars on top.
