I’m a sucker for thrift store silver, even when it looks completely past its prime. Tarnished serving platters and little trays are usually tucked on the bottom shelf looking dull and forgotten, but they’re perfect for turning into a vintage-style vanity set that looks far more expensive than it is. This project uses just three silver pieces to make a coordinated vanity tray arrangement that can hold perfume, jewelry, hand cream, or even a pretty candle on a dresser or bathroom counter.
What I love most about this project is that it gives old pieces a second life without requiring advanced DIY skills. If you can clean, glue, and line things up carefully, you can make this. It’s especially great if you want a charming, feminine organizing project that comes together in an afternoon and still feels unique enough to look like a lucky antique-market find.
Materials
1 large thrifted silver serving platter, about 16 to 18 inches long
Instructions
1. Wash all three silver platters with warm soapy water, rinse them well, and dry completely so you can see the true finish and any problem spots.
2. Polish each platter with silver polish and a microfiber cloth until the raised edges and center surfaces brighten up; leave a little patina in the creases if you like the vintage look.
3. Wipe the undersides of the platters and the tops of the metal feet with rubbing alcohol so the adhesive bonds to a clean, grease-free surface.
4. Turn the large platter upside down and use the ruler to mark placement for four feet, setting each foot about 1 to 1 1/2 inches in from the rim and evenly spaced near the corners or compass points.
5. Repeat the foot placement on the medium and small platters, checking that all four feet sit level before gluing anything down.
6. Apply a generous dab of clear adhesive to one foot at a time and press it onto the underside of the platter; use painter’s tape if needed to keep the feet from shifting while the glue grabs.
7. Glue all twelve feet in place, then leave the platters upside down on a flat surface for the full cure time listed on your adhesive, usually 24 hours.
8. Once cured, turn each tray right side up and test for wobble; if one rocks slightly, add a felt pad or an extra layer of felt under the shortest foot to level it out.
9. Add a self-adhesive felt pad under each metal foot to protect your dresser or vanity surface from scratches.
10. Arrange the three finished trays together on your vanity, using the large one for perfumes or lotion, the medium one for daily jewelry, and the small one for rings or hair clips.
Variations & Tips
Use mismatched pieces: Don’t worry if your platters aren’t from the same set. I actually think slightly different rim patterns make the collection look more layered and collected over time.
Try ornate drawer pulls: If you can’t find bun feet, decorative metal drawer knobs or low-profile cabinet knobs can work beautifully as feet as long as they sit flat and evenly.
Keep some patina: I rarely polish thrifted silver to a mirror finish. Leaving the darker detail in the grooves gives the trays that old-house charm without making them look dirty.
Style for real life: On busy mornings, I like using the smallest tray for the jewelry I reach for most often so it doesn’t disappear across the bathroom counter. It’s one of those tiny systems that makes getting ready feel less chaotic.
Check the weight: These trays are best for vanity items, not heavy storage. Perfume bottles, makeup, brushes, and jewelry are perfect; stacks of jars or heavy decor can strain the glued feet over time.
Make it giftable: This set makes a really pretty handmade gift for a bridal shower, Mother’s Day, or a birthday. I’d wrap the trays in tissue and include a silver polishing cloth so the whole thing feels extra thoughtful.
