Empty pill bottles are one of those little things that seem too useful to toss, but too awkward to keep. This simple autumn bud vase trio is one of my favorite ways to turn them into something charming and seasonal, and it takes just a handful of craft supplies to make three sweet little vases for a mantel, table centerpiece, or kitchen windowsill.

I especially love projects like this because they’re budget-friendly, quick to finish, and easy to personalize. If you like cozy fall decorating but don’t want to spend much, this is a lovely afternoon craft that works well for beginners and for anyone who enjoys making a home feel warm and welcoming.

Materials

3 empty pill bottles, cleaned and labels removed, standard 4-inch size
1 sheet burlap-style fabric, 12 x 12 inches
2 yards jute twine
3 pieces lace ribbon, 8 inches each
6 faux fall leaf stems, cut into small sprigs
9 dried wheat stems, 6 to 8 inches long
12 small faux berry picks, cut into short stems
3 small unfinished wood tags, about 2 inches each
1 bottle matte cream acrylic paint, 2 ounces
1 medium paintbrush, 1 inch wide
1 hot glue gun
2 hot glue sticks, standard size
1 pair scissors
1 cup warm soapy water for cleaning bottles
1 paper towel or clean dish towel for drying

Instructions

1. Wash the three pill bottles in warm soapy water, remove all label residue, and dry them completely so the paint and glue will stick well.

2. Paint each bottle with a thin coat of matte cream acrylic paint, let it dry, and add a second coat if the orange plastic still shows through.

3. Cut the burlap-style fabric into three rectangles large enough to wrap around each bottle, leaving a little overlap in back.

4. Hot glue one fabric rectangle around each bottle, pressing the seam flat at the back so the front stays neat and smooth.

5. Tie a piece of lace ribbon around the center of each bottle and secure it with a small dot of hot glue so it stays in place.

6. Wrap jute twine around the neck of each bottle two or three times, knot it, and glue a small wood tag onto the front or side for a simple rustic touch.

7. Trim the faux leaf stems, wheat stems, and berry picks so each bottle can hold a small arrangement that stands about 8 to 10 inches tall.

8. Arrange 2 faux leaf sprigs, 3 wheat stems, and 4 berry picks in each bottle, adjusting the height and angle until the trio looks balanced together.

9. Set the three bud vases in a row or cluster them closely as a centerpiece, and add a teaspoon or two of water only if you’re using fresh stems instead of faux or dried ones.

Variations & Tips

For a more polished look: Swap the burlap-style fabric for linen ribbon or neutral scrapbook paper if you want something a little cleaner and less rustic.

For picky decorators: In my house, not everyone loves bright orange and red fall colors, so I sometimes use cream, olive, and muted gold stems for a softer arrangement that still feels seasonal.

If the bottles feel too light: Add a spoonful of dry beans, rice, or small pebbles to the bottom before arranging your stems to help the vases stand steady.

For fresh flowers: Keep the inside of the bottle unlined and undecorated near the opening so a little water can be added without soaking fabric or ribbon.

For gift giving: Tie the trio together with an extra length of twine and set them on a small thrifted tray. It makes a thoughtful hostess gift, and I’ve found it’s one of those handmade pieces people actually use right away.

Make it your own: Tiny pinecones, mini mums, eucalyptus sprigs, or even cinnamon sticks tucked into the arrangement can give each vase its own personality while keeping the set coordinated.
