If you’ve ever bent over a tomato plant and found a fat green caterpillar wearing what looks like dozens of tiny white grains of rice, I can almost guarantee your first reaction was the same as mine the first time I saw it: alarm, confusion, and a strong urge to pick the whole thing off the plant immediately. It looks unnatural, a little creepy, and very much like some kind of infestation. The good news is that what you’re seeing is usually not a new pest problem at all. It’s often evidence that nature has already sent in help.

Those little white cylinders are typically the cocoons of braconid wasps, tiny beneficial parasitic wasps that use large caterpillars—most often tomato hornworms or tobacco hornworms—as hosts for their young. In practical garden terms, this means the caterpillar is already doomed, the wasps are helping reduce future hornworm damage, and the smartest thing to do is usually to leave it alone. Here’s what you’re looking at, how the process works, and what to do next in your tomato patch.

1. What those white “grains of rice” actually are

The white cylinders are not eggs in the usual sense, and they are not part of the caterpillar’s body. They are silk cocoons spun by immature braconid wasps after the wasp larvae have developed inside the caterpillar. Each cocoon is usually about 2 to 4 millimeters long, creamy white, and shaped like a tiny upright capsule or grain of rice.

They often appear in clusters of 20, 30, 50, or even more, attached to the outside of the hornworm’s back or sides. On a bright green caterpillar, they stand out immediately. Once you’ve seen them, they’re hard to mistake for anything else.

2. The caterpillar is usually a hornworm

On tomato plants, the host is most commonly a tomato hornworm or tobacco hornworm. Both are large, smooth green caterpillars that can reach 3 to 4 inches long and are thick as a finger when fully grown. They blend in astonishingly well with tomato foliage, which is why many gardeners don’t notice them until leaves are stripped or fruit has been chewed.

Tomato hornworms and tobacco hornworms look similar, but there are small differences. Tomato hornworms usually have eight V-shaped white markings along the sides and a dark horn. Tobacco hornworms more often have seven diagonal white stripes and a reddish horn. For the average backyard gardener, though, the management is basically the same—and braconid wasps attack both.

3. How braconid wasps got there

An adult female braconid wasp finds the caterpillar and injects her eggs into its body using a slender ovipositor. The adult wasp is tiny, often less than 1/4 inch long, and many gardeners never notice her at all. She is not interested in your tomatoes, your house, or stinging you while you weed. Her target is the caterpillar.

After the eggs hatch, the larvae feed internally on the host. This sounds grisly—and it is—but it’s one of the most effective forms of natural pest control in a vegetable garden. When the larvae are ready, they emerge from the caterpillar and spin those visible white cocoons on the outside. A few days later, depending on temperature, adult wasps emerge from the cocoons and go off to find more hornworms.

4. Why the hornworm is still moving

This is the part many people find unsettling: the caterpillar may still be alive and capable of slow movement even while covered in cocoons. That doesn’t mean the wasps failed. It means you caught the process in the middle.

In many cases, the hornworm stops feeding or feeds very little once the wasp larvae have emerged. It may cling to the stem or underside of a leaf, looking sluggish and unhealthy. From a tomato-grower’s perspective, that caterpillar is no longer the main problem it once was. The wasps have already neutralized it.

5. Should you remove it from the plant?

If the hornworm has white cocoons on it, my advice is simple: do not squash it. Do not spray it. Do not drop it into soapy water. Leave it where it is if possible, or gently move it to a nearby stake, cage, or non-essential stem if it’s in an awkward spot. The goal is to let the adult braconid wasps finish developing and emerge.

Why? Because each surviving adult wasp can help reduce the next generation of hornworms. A single hornworm without parasites can defoliate a tomato plant surprisingly fast, sometimes removing large amounts of foliage in 24 to 48 hours. A parasitized hornworm, by contrast, is already part of your biological control team.

6. How long it takes for the wasps to emerge

In warm summer weather, adult braconid wasps may emerge from the cocoons in roughly 4 to 10 days. Temperature matters. At 80°F to 90°F, development is generally faster than it is at 65°F to 75°F. Humidity and species differences also affect timing, so don’t expect every cluster to follow an exact schedule.

After emergence, the white cocoons often look darker, open, or ragged at one end. If you look closely, you may see neat round exit holes. At that stage, the wasps have already left, and the hornworm will soon die if it hasn’t already.

7. Are braconid wasps dangerous to people or pets?

In normal garden situations, no. Braconid wasps are tiny parasitoid wasps, not aggressive social wasps like yellowjackets. They do not defend nests around the patio, and they are not roaming your yard looking for mammals to sting. Their entire life cycle revolves around insect hosts.

I always tell nervous gardeners to compare the scale. A hornworm might be 3 inches long and weigh several grams. The adult braconid wasp that comes out of those cocoons may be only a few millimeters long. They are specialized, delicate insects, and they are far more useful than threatening.

8. Why this is good news for your tomato patch

Tomato hornworms are among the most destructive late-spring and summer tomato pests in much of North America. A large hornworm can chew leaves, stems, flowers, and green fruit. If you have several on a single plant, they can skeletonize sections of the plant before you notice the damage.

Braconid wasps naturally suppress that damage. They won’t eliminate every hornworm in every garden, but they can make a real dent in the population. In a healthy garden ecosystem, these wasps are one reason hornworm outbreaks don’t become even worse than they already can be. Seeing their cocoons is one of the clearest signs that beneficial insects are actively working in your favor.

9. What not to spray if you want to keep these helpers

Broad-spectrum insecticides can wipe out beneficial insects along with pests. If you spray products indiscriminately—especially pyrethroids, carbaryl, malathion, or other non-selective insect killers—you may reduce hornworms temporarily while also killing the wasps that would have controlled future generations.

Even organic options should be used carefully. Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki) can be useful against young caterpillars, but timing matters, and overuse can still reduce the host population that supports beneficial parasitoids. Spinosad can also affect non-target insects. If you already have braconid cocoons present, that is usually a sign to pause and let nature finish the job.

10. How to check the rest of the plant for more hornworms

Finding one parasitized hornworm often means there may be others nearby—some parasitized, some not. Check your tomatoes in early morning or at dusk when hornworms are easier to spot. Look for missing leaflets, black or dark green pellet-like droppings on leaves or the ground, and stems stripped of foliage.

Use a slow, top-to-bottom inspection method. I like to inspect one branch at a time, lifting clusters of leaves and checking the undersides. A flashlight helps, even in daylight, because hornworms cast a distinct shadow and reflect light differently than the leaf surface. On a 5-foot tomato cage, I’ll usually spend 2 to 3 minutes per plant if I suspect hornworms.

11. What to do with hornworms that do not have cocoons

If you find hornworms with no braconid cocoons and they’re actively feeding, hand-picking is still one of the fastest control methods in a home garden. Drop them into a bucket of soapy water, place them where birds can get them, or relocate them only if you truly don’t mind feeding moths later. Most tomato growers remove them.

On a small planting of 4 to 12 tomato plants, hand-picking every day or two can be enough. On larger plots, you may need a combination of scouting, encouraging natural predators, and selective treatment for very small caterpillars if damage gets ahead of you.

12. How to encourage more braconid wasps in your garden

Beneficial wasps need more than host insects. Adult parasitoid wasps often feed on nectar, so small-flowered plants are especially useful. Good choices include sweet alyssum, dill, cilantro, fennel, yarrow, parsley in bloom, and native asters. Flowers with shallow, accessible nectar are more useful to tiny wasps than big double blooms.

Try planting nectar sources within 10 to 30 feet of your vegetable bed. Avoid routine insecticide spraying. Leave a bit of ecological variety in the garden rather than managing every square foot like a sterile production zone. In my experience, mixed plantings almost always host more beneficial insect activity than bare-soil rows with heavy spraying.

13. Common things people mistake for braconid cocoons

The most common confusion is with insect eggs. But hornworm eggs are usually laid singly on leaves, not in upright clusters attached to a caterpillar. They are also smooth, round to slightly oval, and much smaller than the cocoon clusters most people notice.

People also sometimes worry it’s a fungal disease or some kind of mold. It isn’t. The clean, individual capsule shape is the clue. Fungal growth tends to look fuzzy, dusty, patchy, or irregular. Braconid cocoons look organized, distinct, and almost carefully glued in place.

14. Will the caterpillar recover?

No, not in any meaningful sense. Once a hornworm is covered with braconid cocoons, its fate is sealed. It may remain attached to the plant for a short time, but it will not grow into a healthy moth. The internal damage from parasitoid development is fatal.

That’s why it makes no sense to “save” the caterpillar if your goal is protecting tomatoes. By the time the cocoons are visible, the ecological decision has already been made. The best thing you can do is allow the wasps to complete their life cycle.

15. The bottom line: what you should do right now

If you found a green caterpillar on your tomato plant covered with tiny white rice-like cylinders standing on end, you are almost certainly looking at a hornworm that has been parasitized by braconid wasps. That is beneficial, not harmful.

Leave that caterpillar alone. Check nearby tomato plants for additional hornworms. Remove any healthy, non-parasitized hornworms you find. Skip broad-spectrum sprays, and consider adding nectar plants nearby to support more beneficial insects. In other words: the little white cocoons may look alarming, but they’re one of the best signs that your garden’s built-in pest control system is doing exactly what it should.
