There are some living room ideas that come from a magazine, and then there are the ones that come from plain old country common sense. This blanket storage bucket is one of those simple fixes I love most: a large galvanized metal bucket, a few neatly rolled wool throws, and suddenly a room feels tidier, warmer, and far more inviting. In my house, anything that can be both useful and pretty earns its keep, and this one certainly does.

If you have extra throw blankets draped over sofas and chairs, this is an easy afternoon project that takes almost no building at all. Materials

1 large galvanized metal bucket, 16 to 18 inches tall and 15 to 17 inches wide
3 cream wool throw blankets, about 50 x 60 inches each
2 brown leather handles, 8 to 10 inches long each
4 small metal screws with washers and nuts, 1/2 inch long, for attaching handles if needed
4 metal rivets, 1/4 inch size, optional alternative to screws
4 small rubber or felt pads, optional for the bucket base
1 soft cloth, for cleaning the bucket
1 tsp mild dish soap mixed with 2 cups warm water, for wiping the metal surface

Instructions

1. Wash out or wipe down the galvanized bucket with the soapy water and a soft cloth, then dry it completely so it looks fresh and won’t transfer dust to the blankets.

2. If your bucket does not already have sturdy side handles, mark matching handle spots about 2 inches below the rim on opposite sides and attach the brown leather handles with screws or rivets.

3. Add small rubber or felt pads to the bottom if you plan to place the bucket on hardwood floors, which helps prevent scratching and keeps it from sliding.

4. Fold each wool blanket lengthwise into thirds so the width becomes narrow enough to fit the bucket while still looking full and plush.

5. Roll each folded blanket tightly from one short end to the other, keeping the edges straight so the rolls look even and polished.

6. Stand the rolled blankets upright inside the bucket, arranging them snugly so they support one another and fill the opening without flopping over.

7. Turn the prettiest blanket edges outward and adjust the height of each roll until the arrangement looks balanced and easy for guests to grab.

Variations & Tips

For a softer look: Use heathered wool throws, oatmeal-colored blankets, or a mix of cream and light gray if you want the bucket to blend gently into neutral farmhouse décor.

For larger families: Choose a wider tub or bucket around 19 to 21 inches across so you can hold four or five throws instead of three.

For easier rolling: If a blanket is bulky, smooth it flat with your hands before each fold; that little extra care makes a much neater roll, and I find it helps the whole arrangement look intentional rather than stuffed in.

For protecting blankets: Make sure the inside of the metal bucket is smooth and clean, and sand or cover any rough spot before use so delicate wool doesn’t snag.

For seasonal styling: I like cream wool for winter, but in warmer months you can swap in lightweight cotton throws and keep the very same bucket in service all year long.

For placement: Set the bucket where people naturally reach for comfort—next to the couch is best in my experience, because guests will actually use the blankets if they can see them easily.
