I love a project that turns something overlooked into a table detail that looks downright special, and these harvest napkin rings do exactly that. Using just 2 old leather belts from the thrift store, you can make a set of 4 rustic napkin rings that feel warm, cozy, and perfect for fall dinners, Thanksgiving, or even a simple weeknight meal when you want the table to feel a little more cared for.
This is a beginner-friendly craft, and it’s especially nice if you enjoy decorating on a budget the way I do. I’m always looking for little ways to make family meals feel memorable without spending much, and this is one of those projects that gives you a lot of charm for very little effort.
Materials
2 old leather belts, adult size, at least 36 inches long each
Instructions
1. Wipe down the belts with a damp cloth and let them dry completely so the leather is clean and easier to work with.
2. Cut away the belt buckles and tip ends, then measure and mark 4 strips that are each 7 inches long and 1 inch wide.
3. Trim the ends of each strip straight across, and test one by looping it into a ring around a rolled napkin to make sure the size feels right.
4. Overlap the ends of one leather strip by about 1 inch and glue them together to form a ring; repeat with the remaining 3 strips.
5. Let the glued rings set for the time recommended on your glue, and reinforce the overlap with a few stitches or a short piece of floral wire if you want them extra sturdy.
6. Gather a small bundle for each ring using 2 to 3 wheat stems, 2 faux leaves, and 1 mini pinecone, keeping the bundle narrow enough to sit neatly on the front of the ring.
7. Tie one bundle onto each leather ring with an 8-inch piece of jute twine, knotting it tightly over the glued seam so the seam is hidden.
8. Add a small dot of craft glue under the bundle and under the twine knot to keep everything facing forward, then let the rings dry completely before using them.
9. Slide each finished ring over a folded cloth napkin and fluff the wheat and leaves so the front looks full and balanced.
Variations & Tips
For a more polished look: Use belts in the same shade of brown so all 4 rings match closely. If you like a collected look, mix tan and dark brown for a little extra character.
For picky decorators: If your family prefers less of the “busy fall” look, skip the pinecone and use only wheat plus one leaf on each ring for a simpler style.
For real gathered materials: You can use dried wheat, small dried leaves, or tiny seed heads from the yard, but make sure everything is fully dry before attaching it.
To size for bulky napkins: Increase each leather strip to 7 1/2 or 8 inches long if you use thick layered cloth napkins. I always test one ring first before cutting all the pieces.
To hide wear marks: Place any cracks, holes, or scuffs from the old belts at the back seam or underneath the twine bundle where they won’t show.
To store them safely: Keep the finished rings in a shallow box with tissue paper so the wheat and leaves don’t get crushed between holidays.
