A porch address planter is one of those projects that looks polished and custom, but it’s surprisingly simple to put together. In this version, I’m using large terracotta pots and black house numbers to create a front porch display that helps guests find your home while adding a warm, welcoming touch.
I love projects like this because they do double duty: they’re practical, and they make the front of the house feel cared for. If you want something beginner-friendly that you can finish in an afternoon, this is a lovely choice. It’s especially nice for anyone who enjoys easy outdoor decorating without hauling out a whole toolbox.
Materials
4 large terracotta pots, 12 to 14 inches wide
Instructions
1. Line up your terracotta pots in the order you want the address to read, and decide which number will go on each pot. I like to set them on the porch first so I can check spacing before I glue anything down.
2. Wipe the outside front of each pot with rubbing alcohol and let it dry completely. This removes dust so the adhesive grabs better.
3. Hold each black number against a pot and use small pieces of painter’s tape to mark the placement. Centering the numbers looks tidy, but you can place them slightly high if you want more room for trailing plants to spill over.
4. Apply a generous bead of outdoor adhesive to the back of the first number, especially around the edges and center. Press it firmly onto the pot and hold it in place for about 30 to 60 seconds.
5. Repeat with the remaining numbers, checking that each one is straight before the glue sets. If any adhesive squeezes out, wipe it away right away with a clean rag.
6. Let the glued numbers cure according to the adhesive directions, keeping the pots upright and undisturbed. For most outdoor adhesives, I wait at least 24 hours before moving on.
7. Set a saucer under each pot and add potting soil until each pot is about two-thirds full. Leave enough room at the top for the plant root ball and a little watering space.
8. Remove each plant from its nursery pot, loosen the roots gently, and place one plant into each terracotta pot. Fill around the roots with more potting soil and press lightly to secure the plant.
9. Water the planters well and arrange them on the porch so the numbers read clearly from left to right. Step back to check the spacing, because a few inches can make the whole display easier to read from the sidewalk.
Variations & Tips
Plant choice: For a clean, classic look, use the same plant in every pot. If your family likes lots of color like mine does, choose flowers in one or two shades so the numbers still stand out.
For picky maintenance habits: If you’re like some folks in my house and forget to water, use hardy plants such as succulents, dwarf grasses, or tough annuals that can handle a little neglect.
Adhesive tip: Make sure the glue is rated for outdoor use and suitable for terracotta. A strong weather-resistant adhesive makes all the difference when your porch gets sun, wind, or rain.
Number spacing: If your address has more than four digits, use smaller pots or group the numbers in two sets. I find it helps to lay everything out on the porch before gluing so the finished display feels balanced.
Style option: You can leave the terracotta natural for a timeless look, or seal the pots with a clear outdoor sealer before planting if you want a little extra protection. Just be sure the surface is fully dry before attaching the numbers.
Porch placement: Put the pots where delivery drivers and visitors can read them easily without blocking your walkway. A spot near the door but slightly off to one side usually looks the most welcoming.
