This cozy living room light is one of those simple projects I love because it looks much more styled than the effort it takes. You’re taking a large clear glass vase, filling it with pinecones, and wrapping warm white fairy lights around the outside for a soft glow that works beautifully on a console table, coffee table, or empty corner that needs a little warmth.
As someone who is always trying to make my house feel inviting without starting a huge weekend project, this is exactly the kind of DIY I come back to. It’s affordable, fast, and very forgiving, so it’s perfect if you want seasonal texture and ambient light without dealing with wiring, wood cuts, or anything complicated.
Materials
1 large clear glass cylinder vase, about 10 to 12 inches tall and 6 to 8 inches wide
Instructions
1. Wipe the outside and inside of the glass vase with a soft dry cloth so the finished light looks clean and clear when it glows.
2. Sort through the pinecones and remove any loose debris, then choose the nicest ones for the top layer since those will be the most visible.
3. Fill the vase with the small pinecones, packing them gently until they sit about 1 inch below the rim so the arrangement looks full but not crowded.
4. Place the battery pack at the back base of the vase or tuck it just behind the vase where it will be easy to reach but not obvious from the front.
5. Starting near the bottom of the vase, wrap the warm white fairy lights around the outside in an upward spiral, spacing the wire about 1 to 1 1/2 inches apart for even coverage.
6. Secure the light strand discreetly with small pieces of clear tape at the back if it slips, keeping the tape hidden from the main viewing side.
7. Adjust the spacing of the lights with your hands so the spiral looks balanced from top to bottom and the pinecones are still clearly visible through the glass.
8. Turn on the fairy lights and place the finished vase light on a side table, shelf, or mantel where the warm glow can reflect off the glass and add cozy light to the room.
Variations & Tips
For a fuller look: Use a mix of small and medium pinecones so the vase fills in more naturally and doesn’t look too uniform.
For easy seasonal changes: Swap the pinecones for ornaments in winter, faux moss in spring, or acorns and dried pods in fall while keeping the same glass vase and light strand.
Battery pack placement: I like hiding the battery pack behind the vase instead of under it, because it makes switching the lights on at the end of a long workday much easier.
Light spacing tip: If the wrapped strand starts looking crowded near the top, unwrap one section and re-space it before taping anything down; it’s much faster than fixing it later.
Surface styling: Set the finished light on a small tray or stack of books if you want it to feel more intentional as part of your living room decor.
Safety note: Use cool-running battery-operated fairy lights only, and keep the vase light away from curtains, paper decor, and any heat source.
