This bedroom sweater bin is one of those small organizing projects that makes a room feel calmer almost instantly. I’m taking a large round woven seagrass basket and fitting a canvas storage cube inside it, which gives you the softness and structure of a fabric bin with the warmth and polish of a natural basket on the outside.
I especially like this project for bedrooms because it’s quick, affordable, and genuinely useful for bulky items like sweaters, pajamas, scarves, or extra throw blankets. As someone who spends a lot of time thinking about how form and function meet in everyday life, I appreciate projects like this that are simple but surprisingly effective.
Materials
1 large round woven seagrass basket with leather handles, approximately 16-18 inches in diameter and 14-16 inches tall
Instructions
1. Measure the inside width and height of your round seagrass basket, then compare it to the canvas cube to make sure the cube will sit down inside without buckling too hard at the corners.
2. Wipe the inside of the basket and the outside of the canvas cube with a damp cloth, then dry both surfaces well so everything is clean and ready to fit together.
3. Open and fully shape the canvas storage cube, pressing out the sides and corners so it holds a crisp square form before you place it in the basket.
4. Gently lower the canvas cube into the seagrass basket, easing in one bottom corner first and then pressing the opposite sides inward slightly so the cube slides down evenly.
5. Adjust the cube so the top edge sits evenly all the way around, with the fabric corners gently pressing against the round basket to create a snug, lined look.
6. If you want the liner to stay perfectly in place, attach 1 adhesive hook-and-loop strip near each upper side of the cube and the matching pieces inside the basket rim, spacing them evenly.
7. Press the cube firmly against the attached strips, then smooth the top edge and inner walls so the liner looks tidy and doesn’t collapse when you add clothing.
8. Fill the finished bin with folded sweaters, rolled scarves, or bedtime essentials, keeping heavier items at the bottom so the basket stays balanced and easy to carry by the leather handles.
Variations & Tips
For a softer look: Use a slightly shorter canvas cube so a bit more of the seagrass basket shows above the liner edge. That gives the finished bin a lighter, more decorative feel.
For better fit: If your basket is much wider than the cube, tuck a folded towel or a piece of quilt batting around the sides before final placement. It helps the liner sit fuller and more evenly.
For sweater storage: I like to store knits loosely folded rather than tightly packed. Natural fibers hold their shape better that way, much like giving dough room to rest instead of forcing it.
For easy cleaning: Choose a canvas cube with a removable insert if possible. You can lift it out, shake out lint, and spot-clean it without disturbing the basket.
For other bedroom uses: This same setup works beautifully for extra pillowcases, winter accessories, or even stuffed animals in a child’s room. The leather handles make it easy to move from closet to bedside.
For a polished finish: Keep the cube seam facing the back of the basket. It’s a tiny styling choice, but it makes the bin look more intentional and store-bought.
