A simple bathroom organizer does not have to look improvised to be useful. For this project, I turn a small clear glass honey jar into a tidy Q-tip holder by filling it with fine white sand and standing cotton swabs upright. It takes only a few minutes, uses very few supplies, and gives you an easy way to keep everyday essentials neat on the counter.
I like projects like this because they borrow a kitchen container and give it a second life in a practical, polished way. 1. Wash the small glass honey jar with warm water and dish soap, then rinse it well and let it dry completely inside and out.
2. Wipe the outside of the jar with a clean microfiber cloth so the glass looks clear and free of streaks.
3. Set the funnel in the mouth of the jar and slowly pour in the fine white sand until the jar is about halfway to two-thirds full.
4. Tap the bottom of the jar gently on a folded towel or the counter to level the sand and remove any uneven pockets.
5. Insert the cotton swabs one at a time, standing them upright in the sand and spacing them so they stay vertical and easy to grab.
6. Adjust the swabs until the top looks full but not crowded, leaving enough room to remove one without tipping the others.
7. Place the finished holder on the bathroom counter, vanity shelf, or inside a cabinet where it will stay dry and easy to reach.
Variations & Tips
Use decorative sand: If you want a softer spa look, try off-white or pale beige sand, but keep the jar clear so the layered texture stays visible.
Choose the right fill level: I find halfway to two-thirds full works best because it gives the swabs enough support without making the jar top-heavy.
Try a lidded version: If your honey jar came with a lid, keep it nearby and cover the swabs when guests are not using them or if the bathroom gets dusty.
Keep everything dry: Make sure both the jar and the sand are fully dry before assembling, or the sand can clump and the swabs may not stand neatly.
Match your bathroom style: This same method works with amber glass, a small jam jar, or a hexagon honey jar if you want a slightly different look while keeping the same practical design.
Refill neatly: When the swabs get low, remove the remaining few first, smooth the sand with a light tap, and then add fresh swabs so the holder keeps its clean shape.
