If you’ve ever peered into a rain barrel, roadside puddle, clogged drain, or a forgotten bucket of water and spotted little grayish creatures wriggling around with what looks like a skinny tail several times longer than the body, you are not imagining the resemblance: they really can look like tiny swimming mice. The good news is that this odd sight has a very familiar explanation. In most cases, those “grubs with tails” are rat-tailed maggots, the aquatic larval stage of certain hoverflies, most commonly drone flies in the genus Eristalis.

The fix is usually straightforward: remove the standing water and the decaying organic material. Empty containers, scrub out sludge, clear gutters, unclog drains, and refresh water sources regularly. If it’s a bucket, birdbath base, wheelbarrow, or planter tray, dump the water and rinse away sediment.

For containers you need to keep outside, refresh the water every 2 to 3 days during warm weather. For drains, mechanical cleaning is more effective than just pouring in a little bleach. Use a drain brush or enzymatic cleaner to remove the biofilm. Without the stagnant, nutrient-rich environment, the larvae cannot continue developing there.

12. When their presence signals a bigger sanitation problem

One or two in an outdoor puddle after heavy rain is not especially dramatic. Dozens or hundreds in water near a home, garage, stable, or basement are a sign that organic waste and moisture have been sitting long enough to create a breeding site. That deserves attention.

Look for rotting leaves, backed-up drains, manure runoff, leaking outdoor faucets, pet waste wash areas, and low spots where water stands for more than 5 to 7 days. Indoors, persistent sightings should push you to inspect plumbing, traps, sewage lines, and any drain that smells sour or swampy.
