This little fall project is exactly the kind of thing I love: inexpensive, fast, and cute enough to make your front door area feel styled on purpose. I’m taking a pair of thrifted wooden candlesticks and topping them with dollar store faux moss balls to create a simple autumn display that looks charming on a porch, by the entry bench, or tucked beside a doormat with pumpkins.
If you like seasonal decorating but don’t want a big complicated craft taking over your kitchen table, this one is for you. It’s beginner-friendly, easy to customize, and because we’re using just two main items, it gives you a lot of payoff for very little effort.

1. Wipe the wooden candlesticks clean and lightly sand any rough spots or flaky old finish so the paint and glue will hold well.
2. Paint both candlesticks in your chosen color, covering the base, stem, and top platform evenly, then let them dry completely.
3. If you want a slightly timeworn look, lightly sand the edges and ridges after the paint dries to bring out the turned details of the wood.
4. Brush on a thin coat of matte sealer or wax if you want extra durability for a covered porch or busy front entry, and let it cure.
5. Test the faux moss balls on top of the candlesticks to make sure they sit centered; if a moss ball has a flat side, place that side down for the most stable fit.
6. Apply a generous ring and center dot of strong glue to the top of one candlestick, then press the moss ball firmly in place for 20 to 30 seconds.
7. Repeat with the second candlestick, checking from all sides so both moss balls sit straight and at a matching height.
8. Let the glue dry fully without moving the pieces so the tops stay secure and balanced.
9. Tie a simple ribbon or twine bow around each candlestick neck, just under the moss ball, and trim the ends neatly for a polished finish.
10. Add felt pads to the bottoms if needed, then style the pair by your front door with pumpkins, a layered doormat, or a lantern so the display feels full and autumn-ready.
Variations & Tips
Paint color: Cream gives this a soft farmhouse look, black makes it feel a little dressier, and warm taupe blends beautifully with orange pumpkins and mums.
For picky decorators: In my house, somebody always likes things simpler, so if bows feel too fussy to you, skip them and just let the moss and candlestick shape do the work.
Make it fuller: Group the finished pair with two to four mini pumpkins or a small crate by the door so the display feels generous instead of lonely.
Better hold: If the moss balls are lightweight but uneven, flatten a tiny spot on the bottom before gluing so they sit more securely on the candlestick tops.
Outdoor placement: These do best in a covered porch or sheltered entry since faux moss and painted thrifted wood will stay nicer longer out of heavy rain.
Easy seasonal swap: Once autumn is over, you can keep the candlesticks and switch the moss balls for ornaments, greenery picks, or small winter accents if they’re attached with removable glue.
