If you’ve ever looked up in late summer or early fall and spotted a giant, gauzy web draped over the tips of tree branches, you know how unsettling it can be. The first time I saw one in our yard, I honestly thought someone had tossed a Halloween decoration into the maple and forgotten about it. Then I noticed the tiny caterpillars wiggling inside, all packed together like they were running a little neighborhood of their own.
The good news is that this creepy-looking mess is usually fall webworms, and while they are definitely dramatic, they’re not usually the tree-killing emergency people assume. I want to walk you through what they are, how to tell them apart from other web-making pests, what kind of damage they actually do, and what I’d do if one showed up on a tree in my own suburban backyard.
1. What you’re probably seeing
That large silky tent wrapping around the ends of branches is most likely a fall webworm nest. Fall webworms are the larval stage of a small white moth, Hyphantria cunea. The caterpillars spin webbing around leaves at the outer ends of branches, then live and feed inside that protective silk.
What makes them so noticeable is the size. A fresh web might start out only 4 to 6 inches across, but over a few weeks it can expand to 1 to 3 feet wide, sometimes even larger on small ornamental trees. From the street, it can look like someone stuffed a white plastic bag into the canopy.
2. Why the web looks “filled with squirming specks”
Those specks are the caterpillars themselves, often dozens or even hundreds of them sharing one web. Young fall webworms feed in groups, and because the silk is semi-transparent, you can usually see their bodies moving around inside. If sunlight hits the nest from behind, the whole thing can look like it’s alive.
As they grow, the caterpillars can reach about 1 inch long. Their color varies, but many are pale yellow to greenish with rows of dark spots and long white hairs. Some populations have darker heads, others lighter ones, so there can be some variation from one yard to the next.
3. When they show up
In the Midwest, where I garden, I usually notice fall webworms from late July through September, with August being prime “what on earth is that in my tree?” season. In warmer areas, there can be more than one generation per year. In cooler areas, there may be just one major late-season wave.
This timing matters because by late summer, many established trees have already done most of their seasonal growth. That’s one reason the damage often looks worse than it really is. A big ugly web in September is visually alarming, but it doesn’t always mean serious long-term harm.
4. Where on the tree they build
One of the easiest ways to identify fall webworms is their location. They build their webs at the ends of branches, enclosing leaves near the branch tips. If you see silk tents out on the outer canopy, that points strongly toward fall webworms.
That’s different from eastern tent caterpillars, which make tents much earlier in spring and usually build them in branch crotches, where limbs join together. This is one of those details I always mention to neighbors, because “web in a tree” gets used for a lot of different pests, but location tells you a lot.
5. Trees they commonly attack
Fall webworms are not picky. They feed on more than 80 species of deciduous trees and shrubs. Some of their favorites include walnut, hickory, pecan, persimmon, sweetgum, cherry, crabapple, birch, elm, maple, and willow.
In suburban neighborhoods, I most often hear about them on ornamental trees near patios, sidewalks, and front yards, mainly because that’s where people actually notice them. A web 18 feet up in a back tree line can go unseen for weeks, while one hanging over your driveway feels impossible to ignore.
6. What kind of damage they actually cause
The caterpillars feed on leaves inside the web, skeletonizing them at first and then consuming more of the tissue as they mature. A small nest may only affect a cluster of leaves on one branch tip. A heavy infestation can cover several branches and make a tree look ragged or prematurely thin.
Still, healthy mature trees usually recover just fine. Defoliation late in the season is much less serious than heavy leaf loss in May or June. A well-established maple, oak, or walnut with a trunk diameter of 8 to 20 inches can typically tolerate this kind of late-season stress without major long-term issues.
The exceptions are young trees, newly planted trees, or trees already stressed by drought, root damage, compacted soil, or disease. If a 1- to 2-inch-caliper sapling gets stripped repeatedly, I’d pay closer attention and step in sooner.
7. Why the webs get so big so fast
Fall webworms enlarge the nest as they feed. They start with a small silk covering over a few leaves, then extend it outward to include fresh foliage. It’s basically an expandable dining room. Every few days, if the caterpillars are active, the web can noticeably spread.
Warm weather speeds this up. During stretches of 80 to 90 degree days, caterpillars can feed aggressively, and a web can go from “tiny patch I barely noticed” to “full haunted-house prop” in less than 2 weeks. That fast growth is why homeowners often feel like the nest appeared overnight.
8. How to tell fall webworms from eastern tent caterpillars
This is the comparison I make most often. Fall webworms show up in late summer to early fall, and their webs are at branch tips. Eastern tent caterpillars show up in spring, often March through May depending on region, and build tents in branch crotches.
The caterpillars also look different. Eastern tent caterpillars usually have a more distinct pale stripe down the back and patterned blue and black markings. Fall webworms tend to be fuzzier-looking and live within a larger enclosing web that contains the leaves they’re eating.
If it’s September and the web is wrapped around leafy branch ends, I’d put my money on fall webworms.
9. Are they dangerous to people or pets?
For most households, fall webworms are more gross than dangerous. They do not sting, and they are not aggressive. They stay in the tree and feed on leaves. You generally do not need to worry about them attacking people walking underneath.
That said, the hairs on caterpillars can occasionally irritate sensitive skin. If I’m pruning out a nest or handling infested branches, I wear gloves, long sleeves, and eye protection. If kids are curious, I’d encourage “look, don’t touch,” mainly to avoid skin irritation and because no one needs caterpillar goo on their school clothes.
Pets are usually fine if they ignore them, but I wouldn’t let a dog chew on infested branches. It’s just not worth the stomach upset or possible irritation.
10. When you can simply leave them alone
If the nest is high in a large, healthy tree and only affects a small portion of the canopy, doing nothing is often perfectly reasonable. Nature has a way of handling a lot of this on its own. Birds, predatory insects, spiders, and parasitic wasps all help reduce caterpillar numbers.
By the time many people notice the webs, the caterpillars are already well along in development. In that case, the damage is mostly cosmetic and temporary. If the tree is otherwise vigorous, has normal leaf color, and isn’t dealing with drought stress, I usually lean toward monitoring rather than rushing into treatment.
11. The easiest control method for small infestations
For reachable nests, the simplest method is physical removal. If the web is on a branch you can safely access from the ground with pruners or a pole pruner, clip off the affected branch tip and dispose of it. I like to do this early in the morning when the caterpillars are grouped inside.
Drop the cut branch directly into a trash bag or bucket. Don’t just shake it onto the lawn and walk away, because plenty of caterpillars may survive. For small ornamental trees under 10 to 12 feet tall, this is often the most practical solution.
Avoid wild hacking, though. I’ve seen people over-prune a tree trying to remove every last web. Losing 15 to 20 percent of the canopy to pruning can be more stressful than the webworms themselves.
12. Why I don’t recommend torching, blasting, or smashing
Every fall, somebody suggests fire. Please do not burn webs out of a tree. It can scorch bark, injure the tree, start a fire, and create a much bigger problem than a few caterpillars. The same goes for sticking a flame source into dry late-season foliage.
Blasting webs with a hose usually tears the silk but often doesn’t remove enough caterpillars to matter, especially once the web is dense. Smashing reachable nests by hand is messy and incomplete. Practical, low-drama control works better than dramatic backyard warfare.
13. When insecticides make sense
Insecticides are usually most effective when the caterpillars are small and the webs are still developing. Once the nest is thick and the caterpillars are large, sprays are less useful because the silk protects them and they may soon stop feeding anyway.
If treatment is needed, products containing Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki, often called Bt, can work well on young caterpillars. Spinosad is another option sometimes used for caterpillar control. Both need to reach the feeding larvae to be effective, so timing matters.
For a tall tree with webs 20 to 30 feet up, getting good coverage is difficult without professional equipment. At that point, hiring a certified arborist or licensed applicator may make more sense than buying a homeowner spray and hoping for the best.
14. What the fall webworm life cycle looks like
Adult moths emerge, mate, and lay eggs on leaves. A single egg mass can contain a few hundred eggs, often 200 to 500. After hatching, the young caterpillars start spinning silk and feeding together. Over roughly 4 to 6 weeks, they pass through several growth stages, called instars.
Once mature, they leave the web, crawl down or drop from the tree, and pupate in sheltered places like bark crevices, leaf litter, mulch, or under debris. In northern areas, they often overwinter as pupae and emerge the following year as moths. In warmer climates, there may be 2 to 4 generations annually.
That “mass exodus” stage can surprise people. One day the web seems packed, and the next it looks abandoned. That’s normal.
15. How to help a stressed tree recover
If your tree has had a noticeable infestation, focus on tree health rather than panic. Give it deep watering during dry periods, especially if rainfall is under 1 inch per week. For a young tree, that might mean 10 to 15 gallons once or twice weekly. For a larger established tree, slow soaking over the root zone is better than frequent shallow watering.
Keep 2 to 3 inches of mulch around the base, but not piled against the trunk. Avoid heavy fertilizing unless a soil test shows a need. I’ve learned the hard way that throwing fertilizer at every plant problem usually creates a different problem later. Good watering and less root-zone stress go much further.
16. When it’s time to call an arborist
I’d call a professional if the tree is large, the webs are numerous, the branches are out of safe reach, or the tree is already in poor condition. I’d also get expert help if a valuable specimen tree, like a mature ornamental or newly installed landscape tree, has repeated heavy infestations year after year.
An arborist can tell you whether you’re dealing with fall webworms alone or a bigger health issue, like cankers, borers, drought decline, or dieback. Sometimes the web gets blamed because it’s obvious, while the real problem has been developing quietly for 2 or 3 seasons.
17. The bottom line
If you found a giant silky web wrapping the ends of branches and it’s packed with moving specks, you’re almost certainly looking at fall webworms. They are creepy-looking, very common, and usually more alarming than destructive, especially on mature healthy trees in late summer.
In my own yard, I treat them based on scale. One small web in a healthy tree? I usually ignore it or prune it out if it’s easy. Multiple nests on a young or stressed tree? Then I take action sooner. The biggest thing to remember is that not every weird yard sighting is a disaster. Sometimes it’s just one of those very theatrical insects doing its annual thing.
