There’s something deeply satisfying about turning a couple of simple kitchen pieces into an organizer that looks neat, sturdy, and truly useful. This utensil divider is made by sliding small bamboo drawer organizers right into a deep ceramic baking dish, and the result is one of those clever little fixes that makes a busy kitchen feel calmer in a hurry.
I’m especially fond of projects like this because they don’t ask for fancy tools or a whole afternoon. If you’ve got a drawer, shelf, pantry nook, or countertop corner that’s forever collecting spatulas, whisks, tongs, and wooden spoons, this is an easy way to corral the lot of them while still keeping everything pretty enough to leave out.
Materials
1 deep white ceramic baking dish, about 9 x 13 inches and 3 inches deep
Instructions
1. Wash and dry the ceramic baking dish thoroughly, then wipe the inside with the clean dish towel so the surface is completely dust-free.
2. Measure the inside width of the baking dish and test-fit the bamboo organizers side by side to make sure they slide in snugly without bowing or forcing.
3. Arrange the three bamboo organizers inside the dish with their long sides running lengthwise, leaving each compartment open at the top for utensils.
4. Lift the organizers back out and place one clear silicone bumper near each bottom corner on the outside base of the baking dish to keep the finished piece from sliding on the counter or inside a drawer.
5. Roll small pea-sized bits of museum gel or mounting putty and place them along the bottom of the baking dish where each bamboo organizer will sit, using 3 to 4 small bits per organizer.
6. Slide the bamboo organizers back into the dish, pressing each one gently into the putty so the compartments stay aligned and don’t shift when you grab a utensil.
7. Center the organizers neatly, then check that the top edges sit level and that you have roomy sections for wider tools like spatulas and narrower ones for whisks, peelers, or tongs.
8. Fill the compartments generously: place wooden spoons and spatulas in one section, whisks and tongs in another, and smaller tools like peelers, ladles, measuring spoons, or pastry brushes in the third.
9. Set the finished divider in a deep kitchen drawer, on a pantry shelf, or on the countertop beside the stove where you naturally reach for your everyday tools.
Variations & Tips
For wider utensils: If your spatulas and ladles have chunky handles, use two wider bamboo organizers instead of three narrow ones so everything drops in easily without snagging.
For drawer use: This works beautifully inside a deep drawer because the ceramic dish adds weight and keeps the whole organizer from scooting around every time the drawer opens and shuts.
For countertop storage: Choose your prettiest wood-handled utensils and keep the divider near the stove; the bamboo and white ceramic have a clean, old-fashioned look that feels right at home in a hardworking kitchen.
To protect the dish: Don’t use permanent glue unless you never want to repurpose the baking dish again. Removable putty or museum gel gives enough grip for everyday use and peels away cleanly later.
To make cleaning easy: Lift out the utensils once a week, wipe the bamboo compartments with a barely damp cloth, and dry the ceramic dish well before putting everything back.
My favorite way to use it: I like to sort by task rather than by utensil type: baking tools in one section, stovetop tools in another, and small everyday grab-and-go pieces in the last. It saves me a surprising amount of rummaging, especially on busy supper nights.
