I love little projects like this because they make a bedroom feel cared for without costing much or taking an afternoon to finish. These tiny muslin clove sachets tuck right into folded sweater stacks and add a warm, clean fall scent while helping stored knits feel a bit fresher between wears.
This is especially nice if you keep sweaters in open shelves, a dresser drawer, or a closet where you want a gentle natural fragrance instead of a strong store-bought product. I make these in batches the same way I prep little kitchen extras for the week—simple, practical, and so handy once they’re done.
Materials
8 small muslin drawstring bags, 3 x 4 inches each
Instructions
1. Spread the towel or set out a tray on your work surface, then arrange the muslin bags, whole cloves, funnel, and measuring spoon so everything is within easy reach.
2. Open one muslin bag fully and place the funnel in the top so the cloves go in neatly instead of rolling across the table.
3. Measure 1 tablespoon of whole cloves into the bag; this amount gives a noticeable scent without making the little bag bulky inside a folded sweater stack.
4. Repeat with the remaining bags until you have 8 filled sachets, keeping the amount in each one about the same so they tuck in evenly.
5. Pull each drawstring tight and knot it once if needed so the cloves stay securely inside when you move sweaters around.
6. Gently press each bag between your fingers to flatten it slightly into a soft little pillow shape that slips easily between folded layers.
7. Tuck one sachet beside or just under every 2 to 3 folded sweaters, spacing them through the stack instead of putting them all on top in one spot.
8. Refresh the scent every week or so by giving each sachet a gentle squeeze, and replace the cloves when the fragrance fades, usually after a few months.
Variations & Tips
For sensitive noses: Start with 2 teaspoons of cloves per bag instead of a full tablespoon if you want a softer scent around clothing.
For larger sweater storage: Use 10 to 12 sachets for a wide dresser drawer or a full closet shelf so the fragrance is spread evenly.
For a fuller fall blend: Mix 3/4 cup whole cloves with 1/4 cup broken cinnamon sticks for a warmer scent, as long as the pieces are large enough not to sift through the muslin.
To keep clothes clean: Make sure the bags are tightly closed and use whole spices only, not ground cloves, which can leave dust on fabrics.
For picky family members: If not everyone likes a strong spicy scent, tuck sachets only into your own sweater stacks or place one near the back of the shelf instead of between every few sweaters.
Easy refresh tip: When you switch seasonal clothes, empty the old cloves into a simmer pot or compost, wash and dry the muslin bags if needed, and refill them for the next round.
