Decorative throw pillows are one of those bedroom extras I absolutely love buying and then immediately regret storing. They make the bed look finished and cozy, but by bedtime they usually end up on a chair, the floor, or in that one corner of the closet that turns into a soft little landslide. This hanger storage trick is the easiest fix I’ve found, and it looks so tidy that people always ask me where I bought it.
If you have a small bedroom, a packed linen closet, or you’re just tired of fluffy pillows taking over every surface, this is a great afternoon project. I designed mine to hold several full-size decorative pillows vertically on sturdy pants hangers, so they stay clean, keep their shape, and hang neatly inside the closet instead of becoming clutter.

Instructions
1. Empty the section of closet where you want the pillow storage to hang, and make sure you have enough vertical room for the pillows to hang without dragging or getting crushed.
2. Wipe each wooden pants hanger with a microfiber cloth and add a very light coat of furniture wax or wood polish so the finished setup looks intentional and polished instead of like random closet leftovers.
3. Stick one adhesive felt pad onto the inside face of each clip, using two pads per hanger, so the clips grip the pillow fabric without leaving marks.
4. Lay out your throw pillows and fluff each one well so it fills out evenly; if any insert has shifted, smooth and redistribute it before hanging.
5. Open one hanger and clip the first pillow near its top edge, about 2 inches in from each side seam, catching enough fabric to hold securely without pinching the center too tightly.
6. Repeat with the remaining pillows, checking that each one hangs straight and that the clips are spaced evenly so the pillow keeps its square shape.
7. Hang the pillow hangers inside the closet, grouping similar colors together and leaving about 1 inch between each hanger so the pillows look full rather than squashed.
8. If you’re using the inside of a closet door or a secondary narrow spot, add slim adhesive hooks or an over-the-door support first, then hang the pillow-filled hangers so they stay accessible but out of the way.
9. Tie short ribbon bows around the hook area of every second or third hanger if you want a prettier finished look that makes the storage feel more bedroom-friendly and less utilitarian.
10. Step back and adjust the pillow order, alternating textures or colors for a fuller, boutique-style display that doubles as storage and a little bit of closet decor.
Variations & Tips
For larger pillows: Use extra-wide wooden skirt or pants hangers for 20 x 20 inch or oversized Euro pillows so the clips support more of the top edge.
For delicate fabric: If your pillow covers are linen, silk-blend, or loosely woven, add an extra layer of felt or fold a small scrap of cotton under each clip before hanging.
For a color-sorted closet: I like arranging pillows from light to dark because it makes the whole closet feel calmer and oddly more expensive-looking with almost no extra effort.
For everyday use: Keep the most-used bed pillows at eye level so it’s easy to swap the look of the bed in the morning when you’re rushing to get out the door.
To keep pillows fluffy: Don’t overcrowd the hangers; a little breathing room helps the inserts hold their shape much better than stacking them in a basket or bin.
Budget option: Clip two smaller accent pillows onto one sturdy hanger only if the hanger is heavy-duty and the pillows are lightweight, otherwise one pillow per hanger looks better and lasts longer.
