This project is really just a thoughtful way to turn a large ceramic bread basket into a pretty bathroom basket that keeps rolled hand towels cozy and ready to use. I like this for guest baths, powder rooms, and even by the tub when you want the room to feel a bit like a little bed-and-breakfast without spending bed-and-breakfast money.
Materials
1 large ceramic bread basket, about 14 inches long x 6 inches wide x 4 inches high
Instructions
1. Wash and dry the hand towels and flannel first so everything is clean, soft, and preshrunk before you assemble the basket.
2. Measure the inside of the ceramic bread basket, then cut a rectangle of flannel large enough to cover the bottom and both long sides with about 2 extra inches to fold neatly over the rim.
3. Press the flannel into the basket, fold the top edge over the rim, and pin the corners so the lining sits snugly without bunching.
4. Lift one section at a time and add small dots of hot glue under the folded rim, then press the flannel back into place so the liner stays secure but still looks soft and cushioned.
5. Warm the reusable heat pack according to its directions, then place it flat in the very bottom center of the lined basket.
6. Roll each hand towel tightly from the short end so you get four full, thick rolls that stand neatly and hold their warmth well.
7. Set the rolled towels upright in the basket, packing them close together over and around the heat pack so the basket looks full and generous.
8. Tuck the flannel gently around the towel rolls so the fabric frames them like a nest and gives the basket a finished, cozy look.
9. Place the basket on the bathroom counter, toilet tank, or a sturdy shelf, and refresh the heat pack whenever you want the towels warm again.
Variations & Tips
For a guest bathroom: Use matching white or cream hand towels and a soft plaid or floral flannel lining if you want that tidy, welcoming look guests always notice.
For extra warmth: Slip a second small microwave-safe heat pack beneath the towels if your basket is especially large, but keep both packs flat so the towels sit evenly.
For easy cleaning: If you’d rather not glue the liner in place, make a simple removable flannel insert by folding and tucking the edges tightly so you can take it out and wash it anytime.
For a prettier finish: A small ribbon tied around one towel roll or around one end of the basket adds a polished touch without getting in the way of using it.
Safety tip: This is best used as a gentle towel warmer with a reusable heat pack, not as a heated electrical appliance, and I always make sure the basket is set on a dry, stable surface away from splashing water.
