There are some little chores in a house that seem to wander off the minute you need them, and stain sticks are one of them. I got tired of digging through a cabinet with a dripping shirt in one hand, so I put together this simple holder by turning a small leather eyeglass case into a magnetic pocket that stays right on the washer. It takes just a few supplies, goes together quickly, and makes the laundry room feel a good bit more put together.

I’m especially fond of projects like this because they solve a real everyday problem without a lot of fuss. If you’ve got a metal washer or dryer and a stain stick that never seems to be where it ought to be, this is an easy afternoon fix that looks neat, works hard, and keeps that handy little tool right where you reach for it.

Materials

1 small tan leather eyeglass case, about 6 1/2 to 7 inches long and 3 inches wide

2 adhesive magnetic strips, 1 inch wide x 4 inches long each, strong enough for metal appliances
1 laundry stain stick, standard full-size stick about 5 to 6 inches tall
1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol or household degreaser for cleaning surfaces
3 cotton pads or 1 small clean cloth for wiping
1 ruler, at least 8 inches long
1 pencil or chalk pencil for light marking
1 pair of scissors for trimming magnetic strips if needed

Instructions

1. Test-fit the stain stick inside the eyeglass case to make sure it slides in and out easily without stretching the case too tightly.

2. Wipe the back of the leather case and the spot on the washer where you want the holder to sit with rubbing alcohol, then let both dry fully so the adhesive grips well.

3. Measure the back of the eyeglass case and lightly mark where the magnetic strips will sit, placing them vertically with a little space between them for even support.

4. Trim the magnetic strips if necessary so they fit neatly on the case without hanging over the edges or interfering with the opening.

5. Peel the backing from the first magnetic strip and press it firmly onto the back of the case for 30 seconds, then repeat with the second strip.

6. Let the adhesive set for the amount of time recommended on the magnetic strips, or at least 15 to 30 minutes if no time is given.

7. Place the case onto the washer, positioning it near the front edge or side where it’s easy to reach but won’t get bumped when loading laundry.

8. Press the case against the washer once more to check that the magnets are holding firmly and that the pocket stays level.

9. Slide the stain stick into the case with the cap facing up so you can grab it quickly before a stain sets in.

10. Give the holder a gentle tug and open-and-close test; if it shifts, add a shorter third magnetic strip across the center back for extra grip.

Variations & Tips

For a heavier bottle: If your stain remover is larger than a standard stick, use three magnetic strips instead of two so the holder stays snug against the washer.

Placement tip: I like to mount mine high enough to stay clear of splashes and detergent drips, but low enough that I can grab it one-handed while sorting clothes.

Surface check: This works best on a metal washer or dryer; if your machine has a nonmagnetic front, move the holder to the side panel or another metal surface nearby.

Make it look finished: Choose a clean, uncracked leather case in a warm tan or brown shade because it adds a nice little touch of softness to a room full of hard utility surfaces.

Easy substitute: A faux leather eyeglass case works too, as long as the back is smooth enough for the adhesive strips to bond well.

Good old common sense: Don’t overload the pocket with clothespins, pens, or loose odds and ends. This holder shines when it does one job well and keeps that stain stick right where you need it.
