A simple paper towel holder can turn into one of those kitchen organizers that looks custom, works hard, and still feels warm and decorative on the counter. For this project, I’m using a tall wooden paper towel holder as the base, wrapping it in copper wire for a richer finish, and sliding ceramic mugs onto the center post to create a compact mug tree with real seasonal charm.
I especially love projects like this because they solve a practical kitchen problem without asking for power tools or a full weekend. If you want a clever way to store favorite mugs, style a coffee station, or add a cozy autumn touch to the kitchen, this is an easy build with a polished payoff.
Materials
Instructions
1. Wipe down the wooden paper towel holder with a soft cloth, then lightly sand the base and center post so the finish and wire grip better.
2. Brush on a thin coat of clear matte or satin sealer over the wood, covering the base and post evenly, and let it dry completely.
3. Turn the holder upside down and stick the four felt pads to the underside of the base, spacing them evenly near the outer edge to protect the countertop and add grip.
4. Add a small dab of clear adhesive near the bottom back side of the center post, press the end of the copper wire into it, and let it set for a minute so the wrap starts securely.
5. Wrap the copper wire tightly up the post in even spirals, keeping each pass snug against the last until you reach about 2 inches from the top.
6. Cut the wire, tuck the end neatly at the back, and secure it with another small dab of adhesive so the wrap stays clean and polished.
7. Let the adhesive dry fully, then test each mug handle over the top of the post to confirm the mugs slide on easily and rest at a slight angle against one another without forcing them.
8. Slide the mugs onto the post one at a time, alternating rust and cream colors and rotating the handles in different directions so the arrangement looks full and balanced.
9. Adjust the mugs so the heavier ones sit lower and the lighter ones sit higher, creating a stable stacked display with the prettiest mug facing front.
10. Place the finished mug tree on a coffee station, open counter corner, or beside the tea kettle where the copper detail and autumn colors can show off.
Variations & Tips
For taller storage: If your paper towel holder is extra tall, you can fit 7 or even 8 mugs, but test the balance first and keep the widest, heaviest mugs closest to the bottom.
For a richer finish: A satin sealer gives the wood a slightly deeper, warmer look than matte, which pairs beautifully with copper and earthy mug colors.
For everyday use: Choose mugs with sturdy, open handles and similar weights so they slide on and off easily without catching on one another during busy mornings.
Copper wire tip: If the wire wants to spring loose, tape it temporarily in place as you wrap, then remove the tape once the final glued end is secure.
Seasonal styling: In autumn, I like rust, cream, and brown mugs; for winter, deep green and white look lovely, and in spring, soft blue and ivory keep the same build feeling fresh.
Counter stability: If the base feels too light for your mug set, add a ring of adhesive cork or a concealed furniture-weight disc under the bottom before attaching the felt pads.
