This little bedroom tray is one of those projects I love because it feels instantly useful and finished with almost no fuss. By setting a small oval mirror neatly inside a shallow copper serving tray, you get a polished catchall for perfume, jewelry, a watch, lip balm, and all the small bedtime essentials that somehow wander across a nightstand. The mirrored base reflects light beautifully, and the copper rim gives it that warm, dressed-up look that makes an ordinary surface feel intentional.

I’m always drawn to projects like this the way I’m drawn to a good finishing drizzle on a dish: simple, but it changes the whole presentation. This is perfect for anyone who wants a prettier bedside setup without power tools, sewing, or a long list of supplies. If your nightstand needs a little order and a little shine, this is an easy afternoon fix.

Materials

1 shallow copper serving tray, approximately 12 inches long x 8 inches wide x 1 inch deep
1 small oval mirror, approximately 10 inches long x 6 inches wide, sized to sit flat inside the tray with a visible copper border
12 pea-sized dots clear museum gel or removable clear mounting gel, about 1 tablespoon total
4 small peel-and-stick felt pads, 1/2 inch each
2 tablespoons isopropyl alcohol
2 lint-free cloths
4 cotton swabs
1 small measuring tape or ruler
1 yard narrow satin ribbon, 3/8 inch wide, optional for a finishing accent
1 teaspoon metal polish for copper, optional

Instructions

1. Measure the inside of the copper tray and confirm that the oval mirror will sit flat with an even copper border showing all the way around.

2. Clean the inside bottom of the tray with a little isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth, then wipe the back and edges of the mirror so both surfaces are dust-free and dry.

3. If the copper looks dull, buff the tray lightly with a small amount of metal polish and a clean cloth, then wipe away any residue so the finish looks warm and even.

4. Turn the mirror over and place 12 small dots of clear museum gel across the back, spacing them around the perimeter and center so the mirror will stay put without rattling.

5. Lower the mirror carefully into the tray and center it so the copper rim frames the oval evenly on all sides.

6. Press lightly over the mirror surface with clean fingertips to seat it into the gel, then check from all angles that it lies flat and does not shift.

7. Add a peel-and-stick felt pad to the underside near each corner or curve of the tray base so it won’t scratch your nightstand and will feel stable when lifted.

8. If you want a softer decorative finish, tie the satin ribbon into a small neat bow and attach it loosely around one tray handle or one side edge, keeping it simple so it doesn’t get in the way of daily use.

9. Place the tray on your nightstand and style it with the items you actually reach for at bedtime, such as a perfume bottle, a ring dish, a watch, and a small hand cream, leaving enough mirrored space visible to keep the look bright and tidy.

Variations & Tips

For a more glam look: Use a tray with small side handles and add a velvet ribbon bow in blush, ivory, or charcoal for a slightly dressier finish.

If your mirror is slightly small: Keep the border even rather than trying to fill the tray edge to edge; that copper frame is what makes the piece look deliberate.

For renters or commitment-shy crafters: Museum gel is a good choice because it holds well but is usually easier to remove later than permanent adhesive.

To keep it practical: Don’t overcrowd the tray. I like to corral just four or five bedside items so it still looks calm and the mirror can bounce light around the room.

Copper care: If you enjoy the bright copper look, polish it occasionally; if you prefer a mellow patina, simply dust it and let it age naturally.

Gift idea: This makes a lovely housewarming or bridal shower gift when paired with a candle, hand cream, or a small bud vase tucked onto the tray.
