In a small living room, every square foot has to earn its keep. I’m always looking for ways to make everyday things feel tidy and pretty at the same time, and this blanket strap is one of those simple ideas that looks far more polished than the effort it takes. By using a thick leather dog collar to hold rolled throw blankets neatly inside a basket, you get storage that stays contained, easy to grab, and handsome enough to leave right out by the sofa.
What I love most is that this project doesn’t ask for fancy tools or a big afternoon of work. It’s especially good for anyone who has a cozy living room, a couple of bulky throws, and not much spare closet space. It reminds me of the sort of practical household trick my generation has always appreciated: use what works, make it look intentional, and enjoy a room that feels calmer the minute you walk into it.

Instructions
1. Measure the inside width of your basket and loosely test the dog collar around two rolled blankets to make sure the collar will buckle without straining; if you have a longer collar, three throws usually fit beautifully.
2. Wipe the leather dog collar with a soft dry cloth, then rub on a light coat of clear leather conditioner so the finish looks rich and intentional rather than like pet hardware borrowed in a hurry.
3. If the basket will sit on wood floors, press adhesive felt pads onto the bottom corners to keep it from scratching and to help it slide easily beside a sofa or chair.
4. Roll each throw blanket into a thick, even bundle, keeping the prettiest knit texture or edge facing outward; I like a firm roll that still looks soft and inviting.
5. Set the rolled blankets upright in the basket, packing them snugly so they support one another; two large chunky throws make a clean look, while a third softer throw can fill any extra space.
6. Wrap the leather dog collar around the center of the rolled blankets, threading it through the basket handles if that fits your basket shape; buckle it firmly enough to hold the rolls together without crushing their loft.
7. Turn the buckle slightly toward the front or one side where it looks decorative, then tug and fluff the tops of the blankets so they fan out generously above the collar.
8. Place the finished basket beside the sofa, under a console, or next to an armchair, and make one last adjustment so the nicest blanket color and texture face outward into the room.
Variations & Tips
Use a larger collar: If your throws are especially thick, choose an extra-large leather dog collar so you can buckle it comfortably around fuller rolls without forcing the strap.
Try color contrast: A cognac collar looks beautiful with cream, oatmeal, charcoal, or olive blankets, and that little bit of contrast helps the whole basket feel styled instead of accidental.
Add seasonal swaps: In winter, I’d use chunky knit and fleece throws; in summer, I’d switch one out for a lighter cotton blanket so the basket still looks full without feeling heavy.
Keep the shape full: If your basket is deeper than your blankets are wide, tuck a folded spare throw or even a plain bath towel behind the rolls to keep them upright and generously packed.
Protect the leather: Real leather holds up beautifully, but it looks best if you condition it every few months, especially if the basket sits near heat vents, sunny windows, or a fireplace.
Make it renter-friendly: Since nothing is glued or permanently altered, this is a lovely little storage trick for apartments and small homes where you want charm without committing to another piece of furniture.
