There are some porch projects that look like they took a whole weekend and a craft room full of supplies, and this is one of my favorite kinds: big impact, very little fuss. Using simple clay pots, a warm orange paint color, and a few finishing touches, you can turn basic garden staples into a cheerful fall piece that looks right at home by the front door.

I love projects like this because they’re budget-friendly, easy to personalize, and beginner-friendly even if you don’t consider yourself especially crafty. If you can paint a flower pot and stack things neatly, you can make this. It’s a wonderful afternoon project, and it gives your porch that cozy, welcoming look I’m always after once the weather starts to turn.

Materials
1 large terracotta clay pot, 10-inch diameter
1 medium terracotta clay pot, 8-inch diameter
1 small terracotta clay pot, 6-inch diameter
Orange outdoor craft paint, 8 ounces
Black outdoor craft paint, 2 ounces
1 1-inch flat paintbrush
1 small round detail paintbrush
1 tube E6000 glue, 2 ounces
1 faux autumn leaf stem or bundle, 12 to 18 leaves total
2 faux leaf sprigs for extra filler around the top, optional but recommended
1 small piece of cardboard or drop cloth to protect your work surface
1 cup water for rinsing brushes
2 paper towels or a clean rag for wiping pots and brushes Instructions

1. Wipe each clay pot with a slightly damp rag to remove dust, then let them dry completely so the paint will stick evenly.

2. Turn all three pots upside down and paint the outside of each one with orange paint, covering the sides and bottom of every pot with 2 solid coats for a rich pumpkin color.

3. Let the orange paint dry, then add gentle pumpkin lines with black paint by brushing 5 to 7 slightly curved vertical stripes around each pot from top edge to bottom edge.

4. Arrange the painted pots from largest on the bottom to smallest on top, all upside down, and check that the stack looks straight before gluing anything in place.

5. Add a generous bead of E6000 glue around the center contact area on top of the large pot, set the medium pot on it upside down, and hold it steady for a minute so it grips.

6. Repeat with the small pot, gluing it centered on top of the medium pot to build a tall, balanced stacked shape.

7. Let the stack sit undisturbed according to the glue directions so the pots fully bond before you decorate the top.

8. Tuck the faux leaves into a full, slightly fanned cluster and glue them around the top opening and rim of the smallest pot so they resemble a leafy pumpkin stem area.

9. Add the extra leaf sprigs if needed to fill any gaps, keeping the top nice and full so the finished piece looks lush and polished from the front.

10. Move the finished piece to your porch and style it where it can be seen easily, like beside the door, near a chair, or next to a lantern or mum.

Variations & Tips

Add a stem: If you want a more pumpkin-like top, glue a short brown painted wooden knob, small branch piece, or chunky cork into the top center before adding the leaves.

Use outdoor paint: If your porch is exposed to weather, choose outdoor-rated craft paint so the orange color stays bright longer through the season.

Make it taller: For a more dramatic porch display, you can add a fourth pot in between sizes, but keep the widest pot on the bottom so the tower stays stable.

Try family-friendly faces: For kids who love Halloween, paint simple jack-o’-lantern faces on one or more pots with black paint instead of just curved lines. I’d keep the expressions sweet rather than spooky if you want it to work all season.

Fill the top generously: This is the little detail that makes the project look store-bought in the best way. Don’t stop at just a few leaves; use enough to create a full topper with a little movement and color variation.

Pair it with porch decor: I love this next to mums, plaid pillows, or a basket of mini pumpkins. If you’re decorating for a family gathering, it makes the whole entry feel festive before anyone even steps inside.
