There are some little household fixes that feel almost too simple to matter, and then you make one and wonder why you did not do it years ago. This small entryway sunglasses holder is exactly that kind of project. By wrapping thick leather cord around a wooden dowel mounted between two wall hooks, you get a neat, handsome spot to tuck sunglasses, readers, or even a lightweight set of keys right where you reach for them on the way out the door.
I have always believed an entryway works best when it earns its keep without looking cluttered, especially in a smaller home. This one has that practical, tidy charm I love: warm wood, sturdy brass, and leather that looks better the more it is handled. If you want something useful that goes together quickly but still looks polished and intentional, this is a fine little afternoon project.
Materials
Instructions
1. Sand the oak dowel first with 150-grit and then with 220-grit sandpaper until it feels smooth in your hand, and wipe away the dust with a clean cloth.
2. Rub on a thin coat of satin wipe-on polyurethane or furniture wax, then let the dowel dry fully so it has a soft finished look that stands up to everyday use.
3. Measure and mark the wall in your entryway so the two brass hooks will sit level and 14 inches apart, which leaves the 16-inch dowel extending about 1 inch past each hook for a balanced finished look.
4. Drill pilot holes or anchor holes at the marks, install the drywall anchors if needed, and screw the brass hooks to the wall so they are firm and perfectly level.
5. Cut or set aside about 16 feet of the thick brown leather cord, then place a dab of clear glue 1 inch from one end of the dowel and press the cord end into it to anchor your starting point.
6. Wrap the leather cord tightly around the dowel, pushing each coil snugly against the last so there are no gaps and the middle 12 to 13 inches of the dowel gets a full, dense leather covering.
7. Add another small dab of glue on the underside near the finishing end, trim the cord neatly, and press the tail down so the seam is hidden when the holder is mounted.
8. Rest the bare ends of the dowel into the two brass hooks with the wrapped section centered, then turn the glued seam toward the wall or downward so the front view stays clean and polished.
9. Test the holder by sliding in two or three pairs of sunglasses between the leather wraps and the wall-facing side of the dowel, adjusting the spacing of the wraps slightly with your fingers if you want tighter grip in one spot.
Variations & Tips
For a narrower wall: Shorten the dowel to 12 inches and place the hooks 10 inches apart, but keep a generous wrapped section in the middle so the holder still looks substantial.
For extra grip: Wrap the leather just a touch tighter and leave the coils very snug; that slight compression helps sunglasses stay put without sliding.
For a darker finish: Use walnut stain on the dowel before adding the topcoat if you want a moodier entryway look with the same simple construction.
For renters: Mount the hooks to a painted wood backer board first, then fasten the board to the wall in as few points as possible so the project is easier to remove later.
For everyday polish: Hang the holder at about shoulder to eye level near the door, and keep a small catchall underneath for keys and loose change so the whole entryway feels orderly instead of pieced together.
My favorite finishing touch: I like leaving the brass bright, the oak natural, and the leather a rich brown because those honest materials do all the decorating for you. In a small space, that kind of warmth goes a long way.
