If you have a small hallway like I do, you know how fast shoes can make the whole space feel a little less fresh. This simple shoe freshener station is one of those tiny household projects that takes just a few minutes, costs very little, and quietly makes everyday life nicer. I love that it tucks neatly by the door, looks tidy instead of makeshift, and helps absorb odors right where they start.
I’m using small muslin tea bags filled with baking soda and storing them inside a ceramic butter dish, which keeps everything contained and easy to grab when needed. It’s a great project for busy households, renters, families with a pile of everyday shoes by the door, or anyone who wants a practical fix that still looks pleasant sitting out.
Materials
1 cream ceramic butter dish with lid, about 7 to 8 inches long
Instructions
1. Wash and dry the ceramic butter dish and lid so the station starts completely clean and ready for daily use.
2. In a small mixing bowl, stir together 1 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of dried lavender buds until evenly combined.
3. Open one muslin tea bag and use the funnel or spoon to fill it with about 2 tablespoons of the baking soda mixture, stopping before it gets too full.
4. Pull the drawstring tight and tie a small knot or bow so the contents stay secure but the bag still looks neat.
5. Repeat with the remaining tea bags until you have 8 evenly filled sachets, each soft and pillow-like rather than packed hard.
6. Place the filled tea bags inside the cream ceramic butter dish in a snug single layer, then set 1 or 2 more gently on top if your dish is deep enough.
7. Put the lid on the butter dish and place the station on a hallway table, entry bench, or shelf near the shoe area so it stays handy but still looks polished.
8. To use, tuck one sachet into each shoe overnight or whenever pairs start smelling stale, then return the sachets to the butter dish between uses.
9. Refresh the station every 3 to 4 weeks by emptying and refilling the tea bags, or sooner if your hallway gets heavy daily traffic.
Variations & Tips
For extra odor control: Add 1 tablespoon of activated charcoal to the baking soda mixture if you have especially hardworking sneakers or kids’ sports shoes by the door.
For picky noses: Skip the lavender completely and use plain baking soda if anyone in your household prefers no added scent.
For a fresher scent: Mix in 5 to 8 drops of essential oil with the baking soda first, then stir very well before filling the bags so there are no damp spots.
For small spaces: Use a shallow butter dish so the station slides easily onto a narrow entry shelf without looking cluttered.
To keep it looking nice: Choose matching white muslin bags and avoid overfilling them; that softer, even shape makes the whole station look much more intentional.
Family tip: I like to keep enough sachets for every frequently worn pair of shoes, because when something is easy to grab and put back, everyone in the house is much more likely to actually use it.
