I love a project like this because it solves two problems at once: it gives you a pretty place to keep bedroom candles, and it uses space that usually goes ignored. The inside of a closet door is prime real estate, especially in a bedroom where dressers and nightstands fill up fast. A slim clear acrylic spice rack turns out to be just the right size for candles, matches, and a little room spray, and because it’s clear it doesn’t make the space feel crowded.

Out here in the country, we’ve always had a habit of making household things do double duty. My mother tucked useful little shelves anywhere she could find them, and I still think those practical tricks are often the prettiest ones. This one is especially good for renters, small bedrooms, dorm-style spaces, or anyone who wants a polished look without pulling out a drill.

Materials

1 small clear acrylic spice rack, about 10 to 12 inches wide and 3 to 4 inches deep

4 heavy-duty large adhesive mounting strips, rated to hold at least 8 pounds total
3 candles, 2 to 3 inches in diameter each, in glass jars or sturdy containers
1 small room spray bottle, 4 to 6 ounces
1 box of matches or 1 small lighter
1 tape measure, at least 12 inches
1 small level, 6 to 9 inches long
1 pencil
1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
4 cotton pads or 1 clean lint-free cloth

Instructions

1. Empty the inside of the closet door area and choose a spot that clears the closet frame and shelves when the door opens and closes. I like to place the rack at chest height so the candles are easy to reach but still safely out of the way.

2. Measure the width of the acrylic spice rack and mark its placement lightly with pencil on the inside of the closet door. Use the level to make sure the guide marks are straight, because even a little tilt will show once candles are sitting on it.

3. Clean the marked area on the closet door with rubbing alcohol and a cotton pad, then clean the back of the acrylic rack where the strips will stick. Let both surfaces dry completely so the adhesive grabs properly.

4. Attach 4 heavy-duty adhesive strips to the back of the acrylic rack, spacing them evenly near the top corners and bottom corners. Press each strip firmly for about 30 seconds so it bonds well to the acrylic.

5. Peel the backing from the exposed side of the strips and line the rack up with your pencil marks. Press the rack firmly onto the closet door for at least 30 to 60 seconds, applying pressure over each strip location.

6. Check the shelf with the level once more and adjust immediately only if your adhesive product allows a few seconds of repositioning. Once it is straight, leave it empty for the full cure time listed on the adhesive package, usually about 1 hour or more.

7. After the adhesive has cured, load the rack with lightweight bedroom candle items: set in 2 or 3 jar candles, add a small room spray, and tuck matches or a lighter neatly to one side. Keep the heaviest candle in the center so the shelf stays balanced and looks nicely arranged.

8. Open and close the door gently a few times to make sure nothing shifts and the rack clears the closet contents. If needed, remove one bulky item and keep the display simple, full, and tidy so it feels intentional rather than crowded.

Variations & Tips

For renters: Use removable heavy-duty strips rated for painted doors, and always follow the weight limits exactly. This keeps the project useful without leaving behind screw holes.

Candle safety: Store candles here, but burn them on a stable open surface instead of inside the closet door area. I always think of candles as something to display neatly and use thoughtfully.

For a fuller look: Use candles in varying heights, such as one short, one medium, and one tall jar candle. That little bit of layering gives the shelf the finished look people notice right away.

For a softer bedroom style: Choose white, amber, or blush-toned candle jars and keep the room spray bottle simple and neutral. Clear acrylic practically disappears, so the colors of the candles become the decoration.

If your door has panels: Mount the rack on the flattest inset section that fully supports the adhesive strips. Avoid trim ridges or beveled edges, because the strips need full contact to hold securely.

To keep it looking polished: Wipe the acrylic with a soft cloth every week or two so dust doesn’t show. Clear storage is lovely, but it always looks best when it’s sparkling clean.
