Small living rooms do best when every item earns its place, and this little coaster station is one of those easy projects that makes a space feel instantly more pulled together. I’m taking a small wooden napkin holder and turning it into a tidy grab-and-go home for stacked round cork coasters, so they’re easy to reach on a coffee table, side table, or media console without looking cluttered.
I love projects like this because they take about as much effort as setting out snacks before company comes over, but the result feels thoughtful and finished. If you’re tired of coasters wandering all over the living room or getting tucked into random drawers, this is a simple fix that looks warm, useful, and right at home in a cozy family space.
Materials
Instructions
1. Wipe the wooden napkin holder and all 12 cork coasters with a soft dry cloth to remove dust so everything looks clean and finished from the start.
2. Lightly sand any rough spots on the napkin holder with the fine-grit sanding block, then wipe away the sanding dust.
3. Brush a thin coat of matte clear sealer over the wooden napkin holder to enrich the honey oak finish and help it stand up to daily handling, then let it dry fully.
4. If the cork edges look fuzzy, smooth them gently with the sanding block using very light pressure so the stack looks neat but still natural.
5. Stack the 12 round cork coasters inside the napkin holder and center them so the holder cradles the stack snugly without bending or pinching the cork.
6. Add a tiny dot of wood glue under the bottom coaster only if the holder is extra loose; this keeps the stack from sliding out while still letting the top coasters lift away easily once dry.
7. Press one felt pad onto each bottom corner of the napkin holder base so the station won’t scratch a coffee table or side table.
8. Cut a 16-inch length of ribbon and tie it around one side of the napkin holder in a simple knot or bow for a soft, finished accent that still keeps the coaster stack easy to access.
9. Set the finished coaster station on your living room table and fan the top 2 or 3 coasters just slightly if you want it to look extra inviting for guests.
Variations & Tips
For picky neatniks: If your family likes everything to have a designated spot, place the coaster station on a small tray with the remote and a candle so the whole coffee table feels organized instead of busy.
Ribbon-free version: If bows aren’t your style, skip the ribbon and keep the look simple with just the sealed honey oak wood and clean cork stack.
Add more capacity: If your napkin holder is slightly taller, you can increase the stack to 14 coasters, but make sure the top few are still easy to grab without tugging.
Protect the cork: Keep the coasters natural and unsealed so they stay absorbent; sealing the wood holder only gives you the polished look without taking away the cork’s usefulness.
Make it giftable: Wrap the finished holder with the extra ribbon and pair it with two mugs or a bag of coffee for a lovely housewarming or hostess gift.
Color match your room: A cream, sage, or black ribbon can help this little station blend in with your living room decor while still keeping the project easy and affordable.
