In a small laundry room, every inch has to earn its keep, and this little dryer ball holder does exactly that. I love projects like this because they solve a real everyday problem without turning into a whole weekend job, and this one keeps wool dryer balls easy to grab, easy to air out, and off the top of the dryer where they always seem to roll away.
If you’ve got a tension rod and a small wire fruit basket, you can put this together in just a few minutes. It’s especially helpful for busy households like mine, where anything that makes laundry flow a little smoother is a win. The open wire basket lets the dryer balls breathe, and hanging it up uses that awkward vertical space beautifully.

Instructions
1. Measure the space above, beside, or between your laundry machines where the holder will hang, and choose a spot with enough room for the basket to sit without bumping cabinet doors or the dryer lid.
2. Wipe down the mounting area so the tension rod grips well, and clean the wall surface too if you plan to add adhesive hooks for extra support.
3. Extend the chrome tension rod and set it firmly in place, keeping it level and high enough that the basket will hang clear of the machines but still be easy to reach.
4. Hold the black wire fruit basket under the rod and decide which side should face outward; I like the deeper curve facing up so the dryer balls sit securely and look tidy.
5. Attach the basket to the rod with two zip ties near the left and right upper edges, looping each tie through the basket wire and around the rod, then pull them snug so the basket hangs evenly.
6. Add two more zip ties toward the back or sides if needed, especially if your basket is wider or more flexible, then trim the tails neatly with scissors or flush cutters.
7. If you want the basket extra steady, place one clear adhesive hook on each side wall so the basket lightly rests against them and doesn’t sway when you grab a dryer ball.
8. Test the setup by pressing gently on the basket and making sure the rod stays secure and the basket doesn’t tilt forward; adjust the zip ties or rod tension if anything shifts.
9. Place the six gray wool dryer balls into the basket, arranging them so they fill it generously without overflowing and remain easy to grab one-handed on laundry day.
10. Use the holder for everyday laundry, returning the dryer balls to the basket right after unloading so they stay visible, ventilated, and ready for the next load.
Variations & Tips
For extra-small laundry rooms: Try hanging the rod in the narrow gap between a cabinet and the side wall, or above the machines where vertical space usually goes unused.
Basket size tip: A basket around 9 to 11 inches wide is roomy enough for six dryer balls and still compact enough to feel neat instead of bulky.
No-slip trick: If your tension rod wants to slide, reset it on a cleaner, flatter section of wall and tighten it more firmly before adding the basket.
Picky-family laundry routine: In my house, the easier I make a system to see and use, the more likely everyone is to help. Keeping the dryer balls right out in the open makes it simple for older kids or spouses to toss them in without asking where they are.
Swap the fasteners: Small metal shower curtain hooks or sturdy S-hooks can work too, but zip ties give the cleanest, least-wiggly hold for a lightweight basket like this.
Make it prettier: If you want a more finished look, choose a matte black basket and a shiny chrome rod for contrast, or match the rod finish to your laundry room hardware.
Keep it practical: Don’t overload the basket with more dryer balls than it comfortably holds; a full but not crammed basket is easier to use and keeps the setup looking polished.
