There are a few little bathroom comforts that feel wildly fancy for almost no effort, and this towel warmer basket is one of my favorites. It’s simply a round wicker bread basket filled with rolled hand towels, with a homemade flannel rice sock tucked underneath to gently warm them first. If you like those small, practical upgrades that make an everyday routine feel more spa-like, this is absolutely worth ten minutes of prep.

I love projects like this because they fit real life. I work full days, and I’m not looking for one more complicated thing to maintain, especially in the bathroom. This version is easy to make, easy to refresh, and pretty enough to leave on the counter or a shelf. It’s especially nice for guest bathrooms, chilly mornings, or those evenings when you want a warm towel ready for face washing or hand drying.

Materials

1 round wicker bread basket, 9 to 10 inches wide and 3 to 4 inches deep

4 ivory cotton hand towels, about 16 x 28 inches each
Flannel fabric, 1 piece 8 x 18 inches for 1 rice sock
Uncooked white rice, 3 cups
Cotton thread, 1 spool in a matching neutral color
Straight pins, 6 to 8
Narrow cotton ribbon, 1 yard optional for a finishing tie
Dried lavender, 2 tablespoons optional

Instructions

1. Wash and dry the hand towels first so they’re clean, fluffy, and ready to use, and make sure the wicker basket is clean and completely dry inside.

2. Make the rice sock by folding the flannel fabric in half lengthwise with right sides together, then sew along one long side and one short side with a 1/2-inch seam to form a tube.

3. Turn the tube right side out, fill it with 3 cups of uncooked rice and the lavender if using, then fold the raw edge inward and sew the opening closed securely.

4. Heat the rice sock in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes, stopping at 30-second intervals to check that it is warm but not overly hot.

5. Place the warm rice sock flat in the bottom of the round wicker bread basket so it covers the center as evenly as possible.

6. Roll each hand towel tightly from the short end so you get four full, plush rolls that stand neatly without unraveling.

7. Set the rolled towels upright around the edge of the basket, packing them closely together so they form a full ring and hold each other in place.

8. Tuck the towel ends slightly inward and adjust the spacing until the basket looks full, even, and polished, with the rice sock hidden underneath.

9. If you want a finished touch, tie a narrow cotton ribbon loosely around the basket rim or into a small bow at the front without blocking the towels.

10. Use the warmed towels within 20 to 30 minutes for the best cozy effect, and reheat the rice sock as needed before the next use.

Variations & Tips

For guest bathrooms: I like to use fresh ivory or white towels and a neutral flannel so the whole basket looks calm and hotel-like on the counter.

Lavender version: Add a little dried lavender to the rice sock if you want a light relaxing scent, but keep it modest so it doesn’t overwhelm a small bathroom.

No-sew option: If sewing is not your thing, you can use a clean ready-made microwaveable rice heating pad that fits flat inside the basket.

Best basket size: A 9- to 10-inch round basket holds four rolled hand towels nicely and looks full instead of skimpy, which makes a big difference in the finished look.

Heating tip: Every microwave is different, so I always heat in short bursts and test carefully; the rice sock should feel comfortably warm, never hot enough to scorch fabric or skin.

Easy refresh: Keep an extra rice sock tucked in a linen closet if you want to swap one in quickly while the other cools or if you use this often during colder months.
