There are a few little bedroom tricks that make everyday life feel calmer, and this is one of my favorites. This DIY jewelry catch is simply a small ceramic pinch bowl set onto a folded velvet ribbon on the nightstand, but it gives rings, earrings, and delicate chains a soft, pretty landing spot instead of letting them wander across the tabletop.
I love projects like this because they take just minutes, use very few supplies, and still look thoughtful and polished. If you want an easy bedside organizer that feels a little more special than setting a dish down by itself, this is a lovely one to make for yourself, a teen’s room, or a guest bedroom.
Materials
Instructions
1. Wipe the nightstand surface and the bottom of the ceramic pinch bowl with a soft cloth so everything sits cleanly and evenly.
2. Measure and cut the velvet ribbon to 18 inches long, which gives you enough length for a full folded base that looks generous under the bowl.
3. Dab a thin line of fray check along both cut ribbon ends and let it dry completely so the velvet stays neat with daily use.
4. Fold the ribbon into a soft layered pad by bringing one end inward, then the other, until you have a stacked rectangle about 4 inches long and slightly wider than the bowl base.
5. Adjust the folds so the velvet looks plush and even, with the smooth side facing up and the folded edges tucked underneath for a finished look.
6. If you want the ribbon pad to stay in one shape, add two tiny dots of clear-drying craft glue between the inner folds only, then press lightly and let it set for a few minutes.
7. Center the small ceramic pinch bowl directly on top of the folded ribbon so the velvet frames it evenly on all sides and softens the look against the nightstand.
8. Test the setup by placing a ring, a pair of stud earrings, or a bracelet in the bowl, and make any small adjustments so the bowl sits level and the ribbon remains visible and smooth underneath.
Variations & Tips
Color match: Choose velvet ribbon in a shade that ties into your bedding or curtains. I especially like dusty rose, cream, sage, or deep navy for a bedroom because they feel soft and restful.
For small spaces: Use a 12-inch ribbon length and a 3-inch bowl if your nightstand is narrow. You will still get the same sweet layered look without taking up too much room.
For picky organizers: If your family tends to drop everything in one place, use the bowl for rings and earrings only, and keep a second matching dish nearby for hair pins or watch bands so it does not get crowded.
Non-slip tip: If the ribbon slides on a slick painted nightstand, place a 2-inch square of clear shelf liner under the ribbon pad to keep the arrangement in place without changing the look.
Gift idea: This makes a very pretty little gift when paired with a satin sleep mask, hand cream, or a small candle. I would tuck the bowl and ribbon into a box with tissue paper for an easy but thoughtful bedroom set.
Cleaning tip: Lift the bowl off before dusting, and spot-clean the ribbon gently if needed. Keeping the velvet dry and the ceramic bowl wiped out regularly will help the whole piece stay polished.
