I love a project that solves a real-life countertop problem without looking plastic or utilitarian, and this bathroom vanity organizer does exactly that. By fitting small glass votives into a vintage wooden thread spool holder, you get tidy little compartments for cotton swabs, makeup brushes, floss picks, lip balm, hair ties, and all those tiny bathroom essentials that usually end up rolling around in a drawer.

This is especially great if you want bathroom storage that feels warm and collected instead of store-bought. I’m always looking for simple organizing tricks that still feel pretty enough to leave out in plain sight, and this one has that charming old-meets-practical look that makes even a busy weekday vanity feel a little more pulled together.

Materials

1 vintage wooden thread spool holder with brass pins, approximately 12 to 16 inches wide
8 to 12 small clear glass votives, 2 to 2.5 inches in diameter, sized to fit between or over the pin rows
1 tablespoon gentle wood cleaner or wood soap
2 soft cotton cloths, lint-free
1 small pack clear museum putty, about 2 ounces
8 to 12 adhesive felt pads, 1/2 inch size
1 ruler or tape measure, 1
1 cotton swab or small detailing brush for cleaning tight corners

Instructions

1. Wipe the wooden thread spool holder with a cloth lightly dampened with wood cleaner, removing dust and residue from the surface, edges, and around the brass pins.

2. Use a dry cloth and a cotton swab or small brush to clean out the tight spaces between pins so the holder is fully clean before adding the glass pieces.

3. Measure the open spaces on the holder and test-fit the clear glass votives until you find the arrangement that feels balanced and secure, using every section you comfortably can for a fuller organizer.

4. Place the widest votives in the center or most stable openings, then fill the outer sections with the remaining votives so the finished piece looks generous and evenly spaced.

5. Add a small pea-sized piece of clear museum putty under each votive that sits loosely, pressing gently so the glass stays in place without permanently attaching it.

6. Stick felt pads under the corners or underside of the spool holder base so it won’t scratch the vanity and will sit level on slick countertops.

7. Fill the votives by category: cotton swabs in one, floss picks in another, lip products in one, makeup brushes in a taller grouping, and hair pins or elastics in the smallest sections.

8. Turn the organizer so the prettiest side of the wood grain faces forward, then give the glass a quick polish with a dry cloth for a clean finished look.

Variations & Tips

For taller storage: Use a mix of standard and slightly taller glass votives if your spool holder has deeper openings, which works especially well for mascara tubes, eyeliner pencils, and slim skincare tools.

For easy cleaning: Keep the votives loose enough to lift out individually so you can rinse them whenever powder, toothpaste dust, or makeup residue builds up.

For a more polished finish: Condition the wood lightly with a furniture-safe wax after cleaning if the holder looks dry, but buff it well so the surface doesn’t feel tacky in a humid bathroom.

For small-space vanities: Use just 6 to 8 votives and leave one section open for a perfume bottle or hand lotion, which keeps the organizer useful without overcrowding the counter.

For safer placement: If your bathroom counter gets bumped a lot during rushed mornings, add a little extra museum putty under the loosest glasses so nothing tips when you reach for a brush. I’m a big fan of this step because anything that makes busy mornings smoother is absolutely worth the extra thirty seconds.
