I love a bedroom fix that makes the whole room feel calmer without turning into a big weekend project, and this hidden charging station does exactly that. By attaching a small wooden letter holder inside a nightstand drawer, you get a tidy upright slot for your phone, a place to route the charging cord, and a cleaner-looking bedside table with no tangled cable pile on top.
This is a wonderful little project for anyone who wants a neater bedtime routine, especially in a family home where chargers seem to multiply overnight. I’m a big fan of simple systems that make everyday life easier, and this one feels surprisingly polished for how fast it comes together.
Materials
Instructions
1. Empty the nightstand drawer completely and wipe the inside surfaces clean, paying extra attention to the drawer side or back panel where the letter holder will attach.
2. Measure your phone with its case on, then compare it to the opening of the letter holder to be sure it will slide in and out easily with a little finger room.
3. Set the letter holder inside the drawer and test a few positions until the drawer closes smoothly and the phone can stand upright without bumping the drawer top or sides.
4. Use the pencil to lightly mark the holder placement, keeping it far enough from the drawer edge that the phone won’t shift when the drawer opens and closes.
5. Cut pieces of self-adhesive felt to fit the inside bottom and inner back of the letter holder, then press them in place to cushion the phone and prevent slipping.
6. Apply the adhesive mounting strips to the outside back of the letter holder, press it firmly onto the marked spot inside the drawer, and hold it in place for the time recommended on the package.
7. Route the charging cable into the drawer from the back or side opening, then secure the slack with adhesive cord clips so the cord stays tidy and doesn’t snag.
8. Plug in the cable and place your phone into the letter holder, checking that the cord reaches comfortably and the phone stays upright without wobbling.
9. Open and close the drawer several times, adjusting the cord clips if needed so nothing pulls tight and the phone remains stable in its slot.
10. Add any small drawer items back around the charging station, leaving a little open space so you can slide the phone in one-handed at the end of the day.
Variations & Tips
For larger phones: Choose a letter holder closer to 7 inches wide with a slightly deeper base so a larger phone or bulky case still slides in easily.
For a softer finish: Line the entire inside of the holder with felt instead of just the contact points; I like this if the phone has a delicate case or a glass back.
For shared bedrooms: Make one charging slot on each side of a wider drawer using two matching wooden letter holders, leaving a center section open for books or reading glasses.
For picky gadget users: In my house, everyone has a strong opinion about cords, so I recommend testing the charging cable with the phone in place before you stick down every cord clip.
For rental-friendly installation: Heavy-duty removable adhesive strips are the easiest option because they hold well but are gentler on furniture than screws or nails.
For an even neater look: Use a cable that matches the drawer interior or furniture finish as closely as possible; that tiny detail makes the setup look custom.
Placement tip: Mount the holder along the drawer side or back corner instead of the center if you still want plenty of room for nightstand essentials like a notepad, lip balm, or reading glasses.
Safety note: Keep the cord away from anything sharp inside the drawer and make sure it doesn’t get pinched when the drawer closes.
