Small bedrooms force you to be clever about storage, and this is one of my favorite little upgrades because it solves two problems at once: it corrals a tangle of earrings and it turns everyday jewelry into wall-worthy décor. By attaching a small metal cooling rack inside a vintage picture frame, you get dozens of tidy hanging spots without taking up a single inch of dresser space.

I like projects like this because they have the same logic as a well-organized kitchen drawer: simple materials, smart structure, and a finished result that looks far more polished than the effort involved. If you have a basic frame, a cooling rack, and a free afternoon, you can make a pretty bedroom organizer that feels custom without being fussy.

Materials

1 vintage-style wood picture frame, 11 x 14 inches, with backing and glass removed
1 metal cooling rack, approximately 9 x 12 inches, sized to fit inside the frame opening
1 can white spray paint, 12 ounces, for the frame
1 can metallic gold spray paint, 10 to 12 ounces, for the cooling rack
1 sheet 120-grit sandpaper, quarter sheet or 1 sanding sponge
1 sheet 220-grit sandpaper, quarter sheet or 1 sanding sponge
1 roll painter’s tape, 1 inch wide
8 small mirror clips or offset clips, 1/2 inch, with matching screws
1 tube strong clear-drying craft adhesive, 2 ounces
4 small screw-in cup hooks, 1/2 inch opening, optional for necklaces or bracelets along the bottom
1 sawtooth hanger or 2 D-rings with hanging wire, for wall mounting
10 to 20 pairs of hook, dangle, or stud earrings with backs, for filling the display

Instructions

1. Remove the frame backing, glass, and any metal tabs so you are left with an empty picture frame, then wipe the frame and cooling rack clean to remove dust and grease.

2. Lightly sand the frame with 120-grit sandpaper, then smooth it with 220-grit so the new paint grabs well and the vintage details stay crisp.

3. Spray the frame with 2 to 3 light coats of white spray paint, letting each coat dry before the next, until the finish looks even and opaque.

4. Spray the cooling rack with 2 light coats of metallic gold spray paint, covering the front, back, and edges so the grid looks finished from every angle.

5. Set the cooling rack behind the frame opening and center it so the grid is evenly spaced inside the frame, then mark where the clips will hold it in place.

6. Attach the cooling rack to the back inner edge of the frame using 8 small mirror clips, spacing them evenly around all four sides so the rack sits flat and secure.

7. Add a small dot of clear-drying craft adhesive under the corners and midpoint of the rack if you want extra hold, then let the adhesive cure fully.

8. Twist 4 small cup hooks into the bottom edge of the frame if you want spots for bracelets, rings, or a couple of lightweight necklaces.

9. Install a sawtooth hanger or D-rings on the back of the frame, making sure the hardware is centered so the piece hangs straight on the wall.

10. Hang the frame at eye level in the bedroom, then add earrings across the grid with fuller spacing at the top and denser rows below for a display that looks balanced and easy to browse.

Variations & Tips

Use the frame you already have: If your frame is slightly larger or smaller, choose a cooling rack that fits comfortably inside the opening with at least 1/2 inch of frame overlap on all sides for the clips.

Make it renter-friendly: If you do not want to add permanent wall hardware, hang the finished display from a removable picture-hanging hook rated for the frame’s weight.

Add more storage: A row of cup hooks along the bottom edge is handy for bracelets, and I also like tucking a small dish on the dresser below for rings and earring backs.

Match your bedroom finishes: Gold is warm and pretty against white, but black, brass, or even a soft pastel frame can work beautifully if that suits your room better.

Choose the right earrings: Hook and dangle earrings slide right onto the rack grid, while stud earrings can be paired through the openings and secured with their backs from the front.

Keep it looking full: This style looks best when the frame is generously filled, so spread your favorite everyday pairs across the whole grid instead of clustering them in one corner.

Check the weight: Cooling racks are light, but solid wood frames can be heavier than they look, so always use hanging hardware and wall anchors appropriate for your wall type.
