This little living room project is one of my favorite kinds of DIY: fast, useful, inexpensive, and just polished enough that people assume I bought it in a boutique. The idea is simple—I stack round cork coasters inside a small clear glass hurricane vase and fill the open space with dried acorns, so the everyday coaster stack turns into part of the decor instead of clutter on the coffee table.
I love projects like this because they work for busy weeks when I still want my house to feel cozy and pulled together. If you like natural textures, fall decorating, or you just want a prettier way to keep coasters handy for guests, this is an easy one to make in under half an hour.
Materials
1 small clear glass hurricane vase, 6 to 7 inches tall and 4 to 5 inches wide
Instructions
1. Wash and dry the hurricane vase if needed, then polish it with the microfiber cloth so the glass looks clear and dust-free.
2. Sort through the acorns and remove any cracked caps, dirt, or pieces of debris so the filler looks clean and intentional inside the vase.
3. Place 4 felt pads evenly on the bottom outside of the vase to protect your coffee table and keep the holder from sliding.
4. Set the vase upright and add a 1-inch layer of acorns to the bottom, creating a natural base that will lift the coaster stack slightly into view.
5. Stack the round cork coasters into a neat pile and lower the stack into the center of the vase, keeping the edges parallel with the glass so it looks crisp and even.
6. Hold the coaster stack steady with one hand and pour acorns around the outside of the stack until they reach near the top coaster, tapping the vase lightly to settle them into gaps.
7. Adjust the top coaster so it sits about 1/2 inch above the surrounding acorns, making it easy for guests to grab while still showing off the layered acorn filler.
8. If you want a more permanent display, add two tiny dots of clear glue between the bottom coaster and the inside base of the vase before the final acorn fill, but keep the rest of the stack loose and removable.
9. Tie the ribbon around the neck or widest upper section of the hurricane vase in a simple bow, or skip it if you prefer a cleaner everyday look.
10. Set the finished holder on your coffee table, side table, or media console and fluff the acorns gently with your fingers so the fill looks full all the way around the cork stack.
Variations & Tips
Use a seasonal filler: If you want this to work beyond fall, swap the acorns for pinecones, dried beans, polished pebbles, or faux cranberries sized large enough not to look messy.
Match your living room colors: A cream ribbon, black-and-white checked bow, or deep olive velvet ribbon can shift the look from rustic to modern without changing the build.
Keep the coasters easy to grab: I like leaving the top coaster slightly above the acorn line because guests instantly understand what the piece is for instead of thinking it is purely decorative.
Make it sturdier for frequent use: If your household grabs coasters constantly, use a slightly wider hurricane vase so there is enough room for the acorns and the stack without wedging the coasters too tightly.
Clean acorns thoroughly: When I bring in natural materials, I always make sure they are completely dry before using them indoors so the finished piece stays fresh and tidy on the table.
Try a layered look: For a fuller designer-style finish, mix acorns with a handful of small pinecones or wood beads in similar tones while keeping the cork stack centered and visible.
