There’s something satisfying about taking two humble household pieces and turning them into a bathroom helper that looks tidy, charming, and genuinely useful. This cotton ball dispenser is exactly that: a clear glass cookie jar filled with fluffy cotton balls and set upside down over a small upturned terra cotta saucer, creating an easy little lift so you can reach underneath and pull out what you need. It reminds me of the sort of clever fix folks used to come up with in farmhouses—simple, practical, and pretty enough to leave out on the counter.

If you like your bathroom organized but don’t want to spend money on fussy storage, this is a lovely afternoon project. It’s especially nice for guest baths, powder rooms, or everyday family use, and because the materials are so straightforward, you can make it look polished with just a few finishing touches.

Materials

1 clear glass cookie jar with lid, about 1 gallon capacity and 8 to 10 inches tall

1 terra cotta plant saucer, 6 to 7 inches wide
1 bag cotton balls, 300-count
4 clear silicone cabinet bumpers, 1/2 inch wide
1 small piece fine-grit sandpaper, 220 grit
1 soft lint-free cloth, 1
2 tablespoons mild dish soap mixed with warm water, for cleaning
2 tablespoons clear matte or satin craft sealer, optional
1 small piece ribbon or twine, 18 inches, optional for finishing

Instructions

1. Wash the glass cookie jar, lid, and terra cotta saucer with warm soapy water, then dry them completely so the finished dispenser stays clean and dust-free.

2. Lightly sand the rim and top surface of the terra cotta saucer to smooth any rough spots, then wipe away all clay dust with the lint-free cloth.

3. If you want a cleaner, less dusty finish, brush or wipe a thin coat of clear matte or satin sealer over the saucer and let it dry fully; this keeps the terra cotta looking warm and natural but a bit more polished for bathroom use.

4. Turn the terra cotta saucer upside down so the raised center ring becomes the base, then stick the four clear silicone bumpers evenly around the edge to keep it from scratching the counter and to help it sit steady.

5. Fluff the cotton balls with your hands and loosely fill the glass cookie jar nearly to the top, using about 250 to 300 cotton balls so it looks full and generous without packing too tightly.

6. Put the lid on the jar securely, making sure the cotton balls are held in place but not compressed so hard that they lose their soft, cloudlike look.

7. Set the upturned saucer in its final bathroom spot, then carefully invert the filled glass jar and center it over the saucer so the jar rests on the saucer with a small gap at the bottom edge for dispensing.

8. Test the dispenser by gently lifting one side of the jar just enough to pull a cotton ball from underneath, then set it back into place and adjust the jar until it sits level and easy to use.

9. If you’d like a finished touch, tie a short ribbon or bit of twine around the knob of the jar lid, keeping it simple so the dispenser still feels clean and bathroom-friendly.

10. Place the completed dispenser beside a sink, vanity tray, or open shelf where cotton balls are handy for makeup removal, first aid, or everyday freshening up.

Variations & Tips

Painted saucer option: If you want the base to better match your bathroom, paint the terra cotta saucer with 2 thin coats of chalk paint or acrylic craft paint, then seal it well so it holds up to humidity.

Jar size tip: A wider cookie jar dispenses more easily than a narrow one because it gives you a broader edge opening underneath; I like one that feels substantial on the counter and holds enough cotton balls that I’m not refilling it every week.

For extra stability: If your jar is especially heavy, use a slightly larger saucer so the base footprint is wider and the dispenser feels more anchored.

Keep it hygienic: Store the dispenser away from direct sink splashes, and wipe both the glass and saucer every few days so everything stays fresh and bathroom-neat.

Matching set idea: Make a companion jar for cotton swabs or bath salts using the same glass-and-terra-cotta look; I’ve always found that when everyday items match, even a hardworking bathroom feels a little more cared for.

Refill trick: When the jar gets low, remove it from the saucer, turn it upright, refill loosely, replace the lid, and invert it again; keeping the cotton balls fluffy instead of crammed in makes the dispenser much easier to use.
