In a small bedroom, the prettiest solution is often the one that also earns its keep. This necklace organizer turns an ordinary wooden cutting board into a warm, tidy wall piece with enough hooks to hold a satisfying collection of delicate chains without tangling them into a bird’s nest. I’m fond of projects like this because they feel practical first, but once they’re hung up and filled, they soften a room the way a framed picture or old family keepsake does.
I especially like this for renters, first apartments, guest rooms, or any bedroom where drawer space is scarce and every surface already has a job. The maple board gives it a simple, honest look, and the little brass cup hooks bring in that quiet bit of polish that makes the whole thing feel intentional instead of makeshift.
Materials
Instructions
1. Wipe the cutting board clean and lightly sand any rough edges or fuzzy spots with 220-grit sandpaper so the board feels smooth to the touch.
2. Apply a thin coat of clear matte polyurethane or furniture wax to the front, edges, and back, then let it dry fully so the wood has a soft finished look that can handle everyday handling.
3. Measure and mark a straight row for the cup hooks across the lower half of the board, placing the line about 2 1/2 inches up from the bottom edge.
4. Mark 12 evenly spaced hook positions along that line, keeping the first and last marks about 1 inch in from each side so the row looks balanced.
5. Wrap a bit of painter’s tape around a small drill bit to mark a safe drilling depth, then drill a shallow pilot hole at each pencil mark to make the hooks go in straight and easy.
6. Twist a brass cup hook into each pilot hole by hand, turning until the threaded portion is fully seated and the open hook ends line up neatly.
7. Turn the board over and attach a D-ring hanger near each upper back corner, setting them about 1 inch down from the top and 1 inch in from the sides.
8. Hang the board on the wall at bedroom eye level using the wall screws and anchors, checking that it sits level before tightening everything down.
9. Drape one necklace per hook, spacing fine chains with the longest pieces toward the outer hooks and shorter favorites near the center so the display looks full but stays easy to reach.
Variations & Tips
Add more storage: If you have a larger jewelry collection, use a 10 x 16 inch cutting board and increase to 14 or 16 hooks, keeping the same even spacing.
Keep chains untangled: I like to leave a little breathing room between chunkier necklaces and save this style of organizer mostly for delicate to medium-weight chains that drape well.
Dress up the finish: A satin clear coat keeps the board looking natural, but a whitewashed or black-stained board with the same brass hooks gives a more tailored bedroom look.
Use the handle if your board has one: If the cutting board includes a handle at the top, let it remain visible and place the hanging hardware a bit lower on the back so that charming shape becomes part of the design.
Prevent wall marks: Stick two small felt pads on the lower back corners of the board so it sits flat and doesn’t scuff the wall when you lift necklaces on and off.
Make it feel finished: Once it’s hung, group necklaces by color or length; that little bit of order makes the whole board look abundant and decorative, almost like bedroom art.
