Some of my favorite holiday projects are the ones that look far fancier than the effort they take. When work is busy, my kitchen is already full, and I still want the house to feel a little special, this is exactly the kind of Christmas decorating trick I reach for. It uses a plain dollar store vase and a few grocery-store ingredients, but the end result has that glowing, dressed-up holiday look that makes a table feel finished in about ten minutes.
This is a perfect project if you want something festive without hauling out bins of décor or committing to a complicated craft. I love it for a dining table, kitchen island, coffee table, or even a bathroom counter during the holidays. It’s simple, affordable, and one of those little projects that always makes people ask how you made it.
Materials
1 tall clear glass cylinder vase, about 8 to 10 inches tall and 4 to 5 inches wide
Instructions
1. Wash the vase well and dry the outside so the glass looks crystal clear once it’s filled.
2. Rinse the cranberries and evergreen or rosemary sprigs, then pat them dry so the water stays as clean as possible.
3. Trim the greenery into neat pieces that are short enough to sit inside the vase without sticking awkwardly above the rim.
4. Add the cranberries to the empty vase, pouring in the full bag so you get a generous layer with plenty of color all around the glass.
5. Tuck the evergreen or rosemary sprigs down along the inside edge of the vase, spacing them evenly so the green shows from multiple sides.
6. Slowly pour in the water from the pitcher until the vase is about 1 inch below the rim, letting the cranberries shift naturally around the greenery.
7. Use the long spoon to gently nudge the greenery into place and redistribute any cranberries that are clumped too tightly on one side.
8. Set the floating candle on top of the water and let it settle in the center; if needed, use the spoon to guide it away from the glass.
9. Wipe the rim and outside of the vase with a soft cloth or paper towel so the glass looks polished and streak-free.
10. Place the vase on a small plate, tray, or centerpiece spot, then light the candle right before guests arrive or whenever you want that warm holiday glow.
Variations & Tips
Use rosemary for convenience: If you don’t have evergreen clippings, rosemary is easy to find, smells amazing, and gives the same fresh green contrast against the cranberries.
Make it fuller: If your vase is on the wider side, use 2 bags of cranberries instead of 1 so the arrangement looks lush and richly colored rather than sparse.
Keep the water clear: I like to assemble this the same day I use it, especially if it’s going on the dinner table. Fresh cranberries and clean greenery help the water stay prettier longer.
Group a few together: For a bigger holiday table, make 3 centerpieces in matching vases with slightly different heights. It gives you that layered, styled look without adding any real difficulty.
Play with candle color: A white floating candle is classic, but ivory, red, or even gold can be beautiful if it matches the rest of your Christmas décor.
Safety first: Never leave the candle unattended, and keep the arrangement away from curtains, loose greenery on the table, and little hands that might want to splash in the vase.
