I love a decorating idea that looks unexpectedly charming but takes less than an hour to pull together, and this candle sconce project is exactly that. By hanging large metal soup ladles on sturdy wall hooks and nestling battery pillar candles inside, you get a warm, cozy living room accent that feels collected and creative without needing power tools, woodworking skills, or a huge budget.
This is especially perfect if you like rustic, vintage-inspired décor or you have an awkward little stretch of wall that needs something more interesting than another framed print. I’m always looking for ways to make my living room feel softer and more finished after a long workday, and these sconces add that glow in such a simple, doable way.
Materials
2 large metal soup ladles, 12 to 14 inches long with bowls about 4 inches wide
Instructions
1. Wipe the ladles, hooks, and candle bottoms with rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth so everything is clean and free of dust or oils.
2. Decide where the sconces will hang, then mark a pair of spots on the wall at eye level, spacing them 10 to 14 inches apart for a balanced living room display.
3. Hold the level across both marks and adjust them until they are even, because the ladles look best when the handles hang at the same height.
4. Install the brass wall hooks using the included screws, adding wall anchors first if you are not screwing into a stud.
5. Hang one soup ladle on each hook by the handle, letting the bowl face upward like a tiny wall cup.
6. Test-fit the ivory battery pillar candles inside the ladle bowls to make sure each candle sits centered and stable.
7. Roll 3 to 4 small pieces of museum putty for each candle and press them onto the bottom edge of the candle base.
8. Set each candle into a ladle bowl and press down gently so the putty grips the metal and keeps the candle from shifting.
9. Step back and check the angle of the ladles; if one tilts too far, slightly rotate the handle on the hook until both sconces match.
10. Turn on the battery candles and dim the nearby lamps so you can see the soft glow and make any final spacing adjustments.
Variations & Tips
Try a trio: If you have a wider wall section, use 3 matching ladles instead of 2 and space them 8 to 10 inches apart for a fuller statement.
Mix warm metals: Copper ladles with brass hooks are my favorite for a cozy look, but pewter or stainless ladles also work if that fits your room better.
Use a timer candle: Battery candles with a built-in timer make this feel extra polished because they switch on automatically in the evening.
Check candle fit first: Bring a ladle with you when shopping if possible, or measure the inside bowl width carefully so your candle sits low and secure instead of wobbling.
Style around them lightly: These look best with a little support from nearby décor like a framed print, a trailing plant, or a small table underneath, but keep the area simple so the ladle shape still stands out.
Renters can adapt it: If you cannot use screws, try heavy-duty removable wall hooks rated for the combined weight of the ladle and candle, then test the hold for a full day before styling the area.
