I love projects like this because they take a handful of castoffs and turn them into something that instantly makes a room feel warmer. If you have an old sweater that is too worn to donate and a few empty bottles from a family dinner or holiday gathering, you can make a set of soft, textured accents in less than an hour.
This is an especially nice project for anyone who wants a cozy seasonal touch without needing fancy tools or a craft room full of supplies. The steps are simple, the materials are forgiving, and the finished set looks far more polished than the effort it takes to pull together.
Materials
Instructions
1. Wash and dry the wine bottles, then remove any labels and sticky residue so the sweater knit can sit smoothly against the glass.
2. Lay the sweater flat and cut off both sleeves at the shoulder seam, then cut one extra wide section from the body of the sweater so you have three knit tubes total.
3. Slide one sweater sleeve down over the first bottle from the top, stretching it until the knit covers most of the bottle and stops about 1 to 2 inches above the base.
4. Fold the top raw edge inward by about 1 inch and glue it just inside the bottle neck opening, working in small sections so the edge looks clean and snug.
5. Pull the lower edge taut, tuck any excess under evenly, and secure it with a thin line of hot glue around the bottom edge so the bottle can still stand flat.
6. Repeat with the second sleeve and the body section, trimming the third knit tube as needed so all three bottles are covered neatly and each one has a slightly different cable pattern.
7. Wrap one 4-foot length of jute twine around the neck of the first bottle 8 to 10 times, knot it firmly, and glue the knot at the back.
8. Tuck one faux pine sprig and two red berry picks under the twine at the front, then add a dot of glue beneath the stems so the arrangement stays in place.
9. Decorate the second and third bottles the same way, angling the pine and berries a little differently on each one so the set looks full and styled instead of too matched.
10. Trim any stray sweater fibers or glue strings, fluff the pine, and set the three bottles together as a grouped display for the fullest look.
Variations & Tips
For a fuller display: I like to cluster all three together rather than scattering them around the room. A grouped arrangement makes the texture and little berry accents feel much more intentional.
For picky decorators: If bright red berries feel too holiday-specific for your family room, swap them for white berries, tiny pinecones, or even dried-looking eucalyptus picks for a softer winter look.
Sweater fit tip: Sleeves with a little stretch are the easiest to work with. If your sweater knit is loose and floppy, cut the tube slightly narrower and overlap the back seam with glue for a cleaner fit.
Bottle height mix: If your bottles are slightly different heights, use that to your advantage. I think a staggered trio often looks even prettier on a mantel, buffet, or entry table.
Make it giftable: These are lovely tied together as a set with an extra loop of twine. If I were bringing them to a friend’s house, I’d tuck in a note and set them on a thrifted tray for an easy hostess gift.
Safety note: These work best with faux greenery. If you use real cuttings, keep moisture away from the sweater fabric and never leave hot-glued items near open flames.
