I love a project that rescues something headed for the donate pile and turns it into decor that looks far more expensive than it is. If you have an old cable-knit sweater with good texture and a foam wreath form, you can make a soft, inviting front-door accent in under an hour, and it has that cozy winter charm that instantly makes an entry feel more pulled together.
This is a great DIY if you want something beginner-friendly, low-mess, and genuinely pretty enough to leave up all season. As someone who is usually squeezing crafts in between work emails and figuring out dinner, I appreciate projects like this that give a big visual payoff without needing a whole Saturday.
Materials
1 old cable-knit sweater, adult medium to extra-large size, clean and dry
Instructions
1. Lay the sweater flat and choose the section with the prettiest, fullest cable pattern, usually the body from just below the underarms to the hem.
2. Cut straight across the sweater from side seam to side seam to create a wide tube of knit fabric that is about 12 to 14 inches tall.
3. Slide the foam wreath ring into the sweater tube and center the most attractive cable pattern on the front so it will be the focal point when the wreath hangs.
4. Pull the sweater fabric snugly around the ring, then fold one raw edge to the back and glue it down in small sections, keeping the knit smooth but not stretched flat.
5. Fold the second raw edge over the first on the back side, tugging just enough to remove slack, and glue it down all the way around to fully wrap the foam form.
6. At the inner and outer curves, make tiny trimming snips only if needed to reduce bulk on the back, then secure any lifted spots with extra glue.
7. Cut a 24-inch length of ribbon, loop it around the top of the wreath, and knot or glue it securely to create the hanger.
8. Use another 24 to 36 inches of ribbon to tie a full bow, then attach it at the top or slightly off-center with hot glue for a softer, styled look.
9. Fluff the knit with your fingers, trim away any stray threads on the back, and make sure the cables are sitting front and center before hanging it up.
Variations & Tips
Best sweater choice: Chunky cable-knit sweaters give the fullest, most luxurious look, but ribbed or waffle knits also work if the fabric still has some thickness.
Color idea: Cream, heather gray, oatmeal, deep red, and forest green all look beautiful for winter, and I usually reach for neutrals because they work with whatever is already on my porch.
If your sweater is thin: Double the fabric by cutting a taller section and overlapping it more generously on the back so the foam ring does not show through the knit.
Bow placement: A centered top bow feels traditional, while an off-center bow looks a little more relaxed and modern.
Make it fuller: If the sweater tube is loose, rotate the fabric slightly before gluing so the knit twists just enough to add extra dimension across the front.
Storage tip: Store the wreath flat in a clean bin or large bag during the off-season so the knit stays dust-free and the bow keeps its shape.
