I love a project that turns the random holiday leftovers in my storage bin into something I actually want to display. If you’ve got a tired strand of old tinsel garland and a few basic supplies, this is one of those easy, low-mess crafts that looks so much more special than the effort it takes. It’s especially great if you want a festive handmade accent without hauling out a full afternoon’s worth of tools.

As someone who is usually squeezing crafts in between work emails and figuring out dinner, I really appreciate projects that are forgiving and still come out polished. This one is perfect for anyone who likes vintage-inspired holiday décor, easy upcycling, or just making something charming from what they already have on hand.

Materials

1 old silver tinsel garland strand, about 9 to 12 feet long total
3 pieces heavy wire, 12 inches, 16 inches, and 20 inches long
1 pair sharp scissors
3 wooden spools, 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches tall each
1/4 cup white craft paint
1 small paintbrush, 1/2 inch wide
2 tablespoons hot glue or strong craft glue, optional for securing the base
1 sheet scrap paper or kraft paper, for trimming cleanup

Instructions

1. Paint the wooden spools with an even coat of white paint and let them dry completely; add a second coat if the wood still shows through.

2. Bend a tiny hook at one end of each wire piece, then slide the other end into the center hole of a wooden spool so each wire stands upright like a trunk.

3. If the wire feels loose in the spool, add a dab of hot glue around the hole and hold the wire straight for a few seconds until secure.

4. Starting at the hooked top of the shortest wire, wrap the silver tinsel garland tightly around the wire, twisting as you go and spacing the first few wraps very close together to build a full tip.

5. Continue wrapping downward in a spiral, widening the spacing gradually so the shape forms a full cone, and press the tinsel upward slightly every few wraps to keep the branches dense.

6. When you reach the bottom, cut the garland, tuck the end firmly around the wire near the spool, and pinch the whole tree gently into an even cone shape.

7. Repeat the wrapping process on the 16-inch and 20-inch wires, making each tree slightly wider at the base than the one before so the trio looks balanced and generous.

8. Trim any extra-long tinsel strands with scissors, especially around the bottom edge, so each tree has a clean silhouette without looking overly perfect.

9. Fluff the branches with your fingers by pulling a little tinsel outward all around the cone, which gives the trees that soft bottle brush look and makes them catch the light better.

10. Touch up the spool bases with a final bit of white paint if needed, then arrange the trees as a clustered set with the tallest in back and the smallest in front.

Variations & Tips

Make a full set: If you have more garland, make 5 trees instead of 3 and vary the heights by 2 to 4 inches for a more dramatic centerpiece or mantel arrangement.

Use what you have: Gold, green, iridescent, or mixed-color tinsel all work here; I’d just keep all the trees in one color family so the finished grouping looks intentional instead of busy.

For extra stability: If your wooden spools are lightweight, glue a coin or metal washer underneath each one before painting to help the trees stand straight.

Keep the cone shape pretty: Wrap tighter at the top and slightly looser near the bottom; that gradual spacing is what gives you a classic tree shape instead of a skinny column.

Add a snowy finish: Dry-brush a tiny bit of white paint onto the outer tips of the tinsel for a frosted look, but use a very light hand so the sparkle still shows through.

Display tip: I like grouping these on a tray or mantel with candles and greenery because it makes them look collected and finished, which is helpful when you want holiday décor to feel styled fast on a busy weeknight.
