I love a bedroom fix that solves two problems at once, and this one surely does. By setting a wooden desk organizer over a pretty fabric-covered box and threading the charging cords up through the organizer holes, you get a tidy little bedside charging station that hides the messy part while keeping your phone, watch, earbuds, and odds and ends right where you need them.
This is the sort of practical project that reminds me of the clever household tricks women used long before every organizer came packaged and labeled at the store. It is simple enough for a beginner, but the finished result looks thoughtful and polished on a nightstand. If your bedside table tends to collect cords, lip balm, reading glasses, and little bits of daily life, this is a wonderful way to bring calm back to the room.
Materials
bamboo desk organizer with 5 to 7 compartments, approximately 12 to 14 inches wide x 8 to 10 inches deep x 5 to 7 inches tall
Instructions
1. Set the bamboo desk organizer on top of the fabric-covered box and center it so the edges line up neatly and the whole piece feels balanced for your nightstand.
2. Decide which compartments will hold each device, then mark the organizer holes you want to use for phone cords, watch charger, and earbud cable so each cord comes up exactly where it will be most useful.
3. Open the storage box and place the USB charging hub inside, checking that the lid can still close and that the cords can reach from inside the box up through the organizer.
4. If your organizer does not already have enough openings, drill one or two extra holes in the bottom of the chosen compartments, making each hole just large enough for the charging end or cord to pass through cleanly.
5. Cut or score a small opening in the back or side of the box lid if needed, just enough for the charging hub power cord to exit discreetly without pinching when the lid is closed.
6. Feed each charging cord from inside the box up through its assigned hole, leaving 6 to 8 inches above the organizer so phones and small devices can rest comfortably while plugged in.
7. Plug all the cords into the USB hub inside the box, coil the extra cord length neatly, and secure the coils with adhesive cable clips so nothing tangles when you open the box later.
8. Use a strip of double-sided mounting tape between the box lid and the organizer base to keep the organizer from sliding, then close the box and press everything firmly into place.
9. Add a thin bead of hot glue and wrap the ribbon or fabric trim around the top edge of the box or around the organizer base if you want the two pieces to look more finished together.
10. Stick felt pads on the bottom corners so the station slides gently on the nightstand and does not scratch the wood.
11. Place your phone, watch, earbuds, glasses, hand cream, or bedtime book into the compartments and give each cord a final adjustment so it sits upright and easy to reach.
Variations & Tips
For more devices: Choose a wider desk organizer and use a 6-port charging hub so you can charge two phones, a watch, earbuds, and even a tablet all in one spot.
For a softer bedroom look: Use a cream, oatmeal, or pale floral fabric-covered box and pair it with a light bamboo organizer. That combination looks calm and blends beautifully with most bedding.
Cord-size tip: Before drilling any new holes, test each cord head carefully. Some charging ends need a larger opening than the cord itself, and it is always better to start small and enlarge the hole if needed.
To keep cords from slipping back down: Add a tiny adhesive clip inside each compartment or tie a small knot below the hole inside the box where it will not show.
If you do not want to drill: Pick a desk organizer that already has pen holes, handle cutouts, or open-bottom compartments and route the cords through those existing openings.
For extra polish: Line one or two compartments with felt or shelf liner so glasses and screens do not get scratched. That little touch makes the whole station feel custom-made.
Bedside practicality: I like to leave one compartment empty for the things that seem to wander at night like reading glasses, lip balm, or my hand lotion. A charging station works best when it handles the clutter as well as the cords.
