This little living room project is one of my favorite kinds of DIY: fast, useful, and charming enough that it looks like you planned your whole coffee table around it. The idea is simple—stack round cork coasters inside a small clear glass hurricane vase, then fill the bottom halfway with dried acorns so the whole thing doubles as storage and seasonal decor.
I love projects like this because they give everyday items a prettier home without adding clutter. If you're like me and always trying to make the living room feel a little more pulled together between work, dinner, and the usual weeknight chaos, this is such an easy win. It takes just a few supplies, but when it's done, it looks thoughtful and polished.
Materials
1 small clear glass hurricane vase, 7 to 9 inches tall and 5 to 6 inches wide
Instructions
1. Wipe the hurricane vase inside and out with glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth so the glass looks clear and polished from every angle.
2. Sort through the acorns and remove any cracked caps, debris, or dusty pieces so the filler looks clean and intentional inside the vase.
3. Fill the bottom of the vase halfway with the dried acorns, letting them settle naturally so you get a full, textured base that still leaves room for the coasters above.
4. Press the vase lightly on the table and rotate it a little to level the acorns; if needed, adjust a few by hand so the top layer sits fairly even.
5. Stack the round cork coasters neatly on top of the acorns, keeping the edges aligned so the pile looks tidy and stays easy to grab during movie nights or when friends stop by.
6. Leave about 1/2 inch of space above the top coaster so the stack doesn't look cramped and fingers can slide in easily to lift one out.
7. If you're placing the holder on a wood table, add 3 small felt dots to the vase base to prevent scratching and help it stay put.
8. Set the finished holder on a coffee table, side table, or console where people naturally reach for drinks, and give the glass one last quick buff for that finished look.
Variations & Tips
For a fall coffee table: Mix in a few tiny pinecones or dried seed pods with the acorns for a fuller seasonal look, but keep the bottom layer dense enough that the coasters still sit level.
For everyday use: Stick with plain natural cork coasters because they're absorbent, lightweight, and they keep the whole arrangement looking calm instead of busy.
For a larger vase: Use 10 to 12 coasters and 4 to 5 cups of acorns if your hurricane is wider or taller, keeping the acorns at about the lower half so the proportions still look balanced.
To keep it practical: Make sure the vase opening is wide enough for your hand to easily lift the coasters out; I always test this first because pretty storage is only worth it if it actually works on a busy evening.
For a polished finish: A quick final buff on the glass makes a huge difference. It's one of those tiny steps I sometimes want to skip when I'm tired after work, but it really makes this look styled instead of just assembled.
